The prophet exhorts the Jews to betake themselves to God for refuge in all their distresses, Who would bless them, v. 1, etc. Which, because their fathers had not done but repaired for refuge to the idols, therefore did all these calamities befall them, 2. After that the prophet speaks of spiritual mercies and benefits, and the victory, which the LORD would give His church in the time of the Messiah, 4, etc.
ASK1 ye of the LORD rain in the time of 2the latter rain; so the LORD shall make 3bright clouds, and give 4them showers of 5rain, to every one grass in the field.
6For the idols have spoken vanity, and the divinersa7have seen a lie, and have told falseb dreams; they comfort in vain: 8therefore 9they 10went their way as a flock, 11they were troubled, because there was 12no shepherd.
Mine anger was kindled against 13the shepherds, and I 14punished 15the goats: for the LORD of hosts 16hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath 17made them 18as his goodly horse in the battle.
19Out of him came forth 20the corner, out of him 21the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him 22every oppressor together.
¶And 23they shall be as mighty men, 24which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them, and 25the riders on horses 26shall be confounded.
And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will 27save 28the house of Joseph, and 29I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.
30And they of Ephraim shall be 31like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall 32see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice 33in the LORD.
I will 34hiss for them, and gather them; 35for I have redeemed them: and 36they shall increase as they have increased.
And 37I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember 38me in far countries; and they shall 39live with their children, and 40turn again.
41I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; 42and place shall not be found for them.
And 43he shall pass through the sea 44with affliction, and 45shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and 46the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and 47the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away.
And 48I will strengthen them 49in the LORD; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the LORD.
