Psalm 72 ©

David, shortly before his death, prays for Solomon and foretells of a most blessed and happy state of his kingdom, the same being a type of the Kingdom of Christ, whereof he rejoices exceedingly through faith about its everlastingness, extensiveness and gloriousness, concluding all with a hearty thanksgiving.

A Psalm for 1Solomon.

1

GIVE the 2king thy 3judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the 4king’s son.

2

He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and 5thy poor with judgment.

3

6The 7mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, 8by righteousness.

4

He shall 9judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the 10oppressor.

5

They shall fear thee 11asa long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.

6

He shall come down like 12rainb upon the 13mown grass: as showers that 14water the earth.

7

15In his days shall the righteous 16flourish; and abundance of peace 17so long as the moon endureth.

8

He shall have dominion also from 18sea to sea, and from the 19river unto the ends of the earth.

9

They 20that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the 21dust.

10

The kings of 22Tarshish and of the 23isles shall bring presents: the kings of 24Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

11

Yea, 25all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.

12

Forc he shall deliver the needy when he 26crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.

13

He shall 27spare the poor and needy, and shall 28save the souls of the needy.

14

He shall redeem their soul from 29deceit and violence: and precious shall their 30blood be in his sight.

15

And he shall 31live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for 32him continually; and daily shall he be 33praised.

16

There shall be an 34handful of corn in the earth upon the 35top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall 36shake like Lebanon: and they of the 37city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

17

His name shall endure for ever: 38his name shall be continued 39as long as the sun: and men 40shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.

18

41Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.

19

And blessed be his 42glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.

43The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.
