THE FIRST EPISTLE GENERAL OF
PETER

1 Peter 1 ©

1 After the superscription of the epistle. 3 The apostle thanks God that He has regenerated us unto an incorruptible inheritance. 5 And withal that He keeps us by faith unto salvation. 6 And makes us joyful in the midst of all trials. 8 Wherefore we also love Him with joy, although we see Him not. 10 Testifies further that the doctrine of this grace is not new, nor inconsiderable, but that the Spirit of Christ in the old prophets foretold the same. 12 And the angels are desirous to look into it. 13 Comes afterwards to several exhortations, and before all to a firm hope in this grace. 14 To holiness. 17 To further laying aside of all vain conduct, from whence we are redeemed by the blood of Christ. 20 Teaches that God indeed chose Christ to this office of Mediator from eternity, but that He is now revealed for our sake. 22 Again draws from thence an exhortation to mutual brotherly love. 23. Seeing we are born again thereunto by the imperishable seed of the Gospel.

1

PETER, 1an apostle of Jesus Christ, 2to the strangers scattereda3throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, 4Asia, and Bithynia,

2

5Elect 6according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, 7through sanctification of the Spirit, 8unto obedience and 9sprinklingb of the blood of Jesus Christ: Gracec unto you, and peace, be 10multiplied.d

3

11Blessedebe 12the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, whichf according to his abundant mercy hath begotten 13us again unto 14a livelyg hope 15byh the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

4

To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reservedi16in heaven for you,

5

Who are 17kept 18by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be 19revealed 20in the last time.

6

21Whereinj ye greatly rejoice, 22though nowk for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold 23temptations:

7

Thatl the trial of your faith, 24being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, 25might be found 26unto praise and honour and glory 27at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

8

Whomm28having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, 29ye rejoice with joy 30unspeakable and 31full of glory:

9

Receiving 32the end of your faith, even the salvation of your 33souls.

10

34Of which salvation then prophets have 35enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied 36of the grace that should come unto you:

11

Searchingo what, or what 37manner of time 38the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand thep sufferings of Christ, and 39the glory that should follow.

12

Unto whom it was revealed, 40that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you withq the 41Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; 42whichr things 43the angels desire to look into.

13

44Wherefores girdt up the loins of your mind, 45be sober, and 46hope to the end for the grace that is 47to be brought unto you 48at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

14

49As obedient children, not 50fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts 51in your ignorance:

15

But as he which hath called you is holy, sou be ye holy in all manner of conversation;

16

Because it is written, Bev ye holy; for I am holy.

17

And if ye call 52on the Father, 53whow without 54respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of 55your sojourning here in fear:

18

Forasmuchx as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold,y from your vain conversation received 56by tradition from your fathers;

19

But withz the precious blood of Christ, 57as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

20

Who verily was 58foreordainedaa before the foundation of the world, but 59was manifest in these last times 60for you,

21

Who 61by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, andab gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

22

Seeing ye have purified your souls 62in obeying the truth through the Spirit untoac unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a 63pure heart 64fervently:

23

Beingad born again, 65not of corruptible seed, but of 66incorruptible,ae67by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

24

Foraf68all flesh 69is as grass, and 70all the glory of man 71as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

25

72But the word of the Lord 73endureth for ever. And 74this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
