THE PROPHET
HAGGAI

Haggai 2 ©

The prophet exhorts Zerubbabel, Joshua and the people to continue diligently in the building of the temple, v. 1, etc. Promising them God’s assistance, 5. Foretelling them at the same time that the Messiah was to appear personally in this temple, 7. Whereby the glory of this temple would exceed the former, 10. After that he reproves the hypocrisy of those who relied upon the outward offerings and ceremonies, 11. He promises the upright and honest Jews that, as before they had tasted the curse of the LORD, they would henceforth be blessed by Him, and their enemies destroyed, 16. He prophecies also of the power of Christ and His might against all that shall oppose Him.

1

IN1 the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, 2came the word of the LORD 3by the prophet Haggai, saying,

2

Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,

3

Who is left among you that saw this house 4in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it 5as nothing?

4

Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, 6all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and 7work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:

5

According to 8the word that I covenanted with you when 9ye came out of Egypt, so 10my spirit 11remaineth among you: fear ye not.

6

For thus saith the LORD of hosts; 12Yet once, it is a little while, and I will 13shake 14the heavens, and 15the earth, and 16the sea, and 17the dry land;

7

And 18I 19will shake all nations, and the 20desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill 21this house 22with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

8

The silver is 23mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

9

The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give 24peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

10

¶In the four and twentieth day 25of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

11

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now 26the priests concerning the law, saying,

12

If 27one bear 28holy flesh in the 29skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall 30it be holy? And the priests answered and said, 31No.

13

Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean 32by a dead body touch 33any of these, shall 34it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, 35It shall be unclean.

14

Then answered Haggai, and said, 36So is this people, and so is this nation 37before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer 38there is unclean.

15

And now, I pray you, 39consider from this day and 40upward, from 41before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

16

42Since those days were, when one came to an heap 43of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfata for to draw out fifty 44vessels out of the press, 45there were but twenty.

17

46I smote 47you with blastingb and with mildew and with hail in allc the labours of your hands; 48yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.

18

49Consider now from this day and 50upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day 51that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider it.

19

52Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet 53the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I 54bless you.

20

¶And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day 55of the month, saying,

21

Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, 56I will shake the heavens and the earth;

22

57And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy 58the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, 59every one by the sword of his brother.

23

In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take 60thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as 61a signet: for I have chosen 62thee, saith the LORD of hosts.
