Hebrews 5 ©

1 The apostle, having declared the prophetical office of Jesus Christ, proceeds in declaring of His priestly office, and rehearses the properties which are necessary in an High Priest. 4 Even as he must also be lawfully called thereunto. 5 Testifies that Christ was by His Father called thereunto, after the order of Melchisedec. 7 And that He in the days of His flesh offered prayers and supplications. 9 And so became a Cause of our salvation, and an High Priest. 11 Of which mystery of Melchisedec, seeing he would treat more in detail, he stirs up their hearts thereunto. 12 Forasmuch as many of them were yet inexperienced, and had more need of milk as children, than strong meat as grown men.

1

FOR 1every high priest taken from among men is ordained 2for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both 3gifts and sacrifices for sins:

2

Who can have 4compassion on the 5ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed 6with infirmity.

3

And by reason hereof 7he ought, asa for the people, so also 8for himself, to offer for sins.

4

Andb no man taketh 9this honour unto 10himself, but he that is called of God, ascwas Aaron.

5

So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but 11he that said unto him, 12Thoud art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

6

As he saith also 13in another place, Thoueart a priest for ever 14after the order of Melchisedec.

7

Whof15in the days of his flesh, when he had 16offered up prayers and supplications 17with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he 18feared;

8

Thoughg he were a Son, yet 19learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;

9

And being made 20perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them 21that obey him;

10

Called 22of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.

11

23Of whom we have many 24things to say, and hard to be uttered, 25seeing ye are 26dull of hearing.

12

Forh when 27for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be 28the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of 29milk, and not of strong 30meat.

13

For every one that useth milk is 31unskilful in the word of righteousness: for 32he is a babe.

14

But 33strong meat belongeth to them that are of 34full age, even those who 35by reason of use have 36their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
