AMOS
Amos 4 ©
God swears that He will cause the great ones at Samaria and all the people to be carried away captive and into banishment, because of their violence, drunkenness, idolatry and incorrigibleness, notwithstanding the many vexations sent unto them, v. 1, etc. Inviting them nevertheless once again unto repentance, by setting before them His majesty and power, 12.
HEAR this word, ye 1kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to 2their masters, 3Bring, and let us drink.
The Lord GOD hath sworn 4by his holiness, that, lo, the 5days shall come upon you, 6that he will 7take you away with hooks, and your 8posterity with 9fishhooks.
And 10ye shall go out at the 11breaches, 12every cow at that which is 13before her; and ye shall cast 14them into the palace, saith the LORD.
¶ 15Come to 16Beth-el, and transgress; 17at Gilgala18multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after 19three years:
And 20offerb a sacrifice of thanksgiving with 21leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this 22liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.
¶And I also have given you 23cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned 24unto me, saith the LORD.
And also I have withholden the 25rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.
So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not 26satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
I have smitten you with 27blastingc and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees 28increased, 29the palmerwormd devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
I have sent among you the pestilence 30after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, 31and have taken away your horses; and I have made the 32stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
I have 33overthrown some of you, as God overthrew 34Sodome and Gomorrah, and ye were as a 35firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.
Therefore 36thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, 37prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.
For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind,f and declareth unto man what is 38his thought, that maketh the 39morning darkness, and treadeth upon the 40high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of 41hosts, is his name.
