AMOS

Amos 6 ©

Woe and captivity announced upon the great ones of Zion and Samaria, by reason of their carnal security, wicked vanity and profusion, v. 1, etc. God swears that He will deliver up the city into the enemy’s hand, with all that which is therein, and cause the rest to perish by His plagues, without sparing great or small, 7. Because of Israel’s senseless perverseness or obstinacy and foolish haughtiness, God will send an oppressing enemy upon them, 12.

1

WOE to 1them that are at 2ease in 3Zion, and 4trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named 5chiefa of the 6nations, to whom the house of Israel 7came!

2

Pass ye unto 8Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the 9great: then go down to 10Gath of the Philistines: be they 11better than these kingdoms? or their border greater than your border?

3

Ye that 12put farb away the 13evilc day, and cause the seat of violence to come 14near;

4

That lie upon beds 15of ivory, and 16stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the 17lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the 18midst of the stall;

5

That chant to the 19sound of the viol,d and invent to themselves instruments of musick, 20like David;

6

That drinke wine 21in bowls, and anoint themselves with the 22chief ointments: but they are not 23grievedf for the 24affliction of 25Joseph.

7

¶Therefore 26now shall they go captive 27with the first that go captive,g and the 28banquet of them that 29stretched themselves shall be 30removed.

8

The Lord GOD hath sworn by 31himself, saith the LORD the God of hosts, I abhor the excellency of 32Jacob, and hate his palaces: therefore will I 33deliver up the city 34with all that is therein.

9

And it shall come to pass, if there 35remain ten men in one house, that they shall 36die.

10

And a man’s 37uncle shall take 38him up, and he that 39burneth 40him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is 41by the sides of the house, Is there 42yet any with thee? and he shall say, 43No. Then shall he say, 44Hold thy tongue: for 45we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.

11

For, behold, the LORD 46commandeth, and he will smite the great house with 47breaches, and the little house with clefts.

12

48Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? 49for ye have turned judgment into 50gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:h

13

Ye which rejoice in a thing of 51nought, which say, Have we not taken to us 52horns by our own strength?

14

But, behold, I will raise up against you a 53nation, O house of Israel, saith the LORD the God of hosts; and they shall 54afflict you from the entering in of 55Hamath unto the river of the 56wilderness.
