THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET
ISAIAH

Isaiah 31 ©

A woe announced against the Jews who went to seek for help in Egypt, and sought not the Lord God, v. 1. The Lord promises that He will protect Jerusalem, 4. If they would turn unto Him, 6. And that He will smite Asshur, and put him to flight, 7.

1

WOE to 1them that go down to Egypt 2for help; and stay 3ona horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they 4look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither 5seek the LORD!

2

Yet 6he 7also is wise, and will bring 8evil, and 9will not call back his words: but will arise 10against the house of the evildoers, and 11against the help of them that work iniquity.

3

Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall 12stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.

4

For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when 13a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself 14for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts 15come down 16to fight 17for mount Zion, and 18for the hill thereof.

5

19Asb birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and 20passing over 21he will preserve it.

6

22Turn ye 23unto him 24from whom the children of Israel have 25deeply revolted.

7

For 26in thatc day every man shall 27cast away 28his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin.

8

¶Then shall the 29Assyrian fall with the sword, 30not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee 31from the sword, and his young men 32shall be discomfited.33

9

And 34hed shall pass over 35to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall 36be afraid 37of the ensign, saith the LORD, 38whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.
