Exodus 19 ©

The Israelites come into the desert of Sinai, in the third month after their exodus out of Egypt, vs. 1, etc. Moses ascends to God upon that mount, 3. There God enjoins him what to say unto the people, 5. The people promise to obey the words of God, which Moses reports again unto the Lord, 8. The people is hallowed against the third day, 10. They must not approach the mountain, 12. The dreadful and terrible presence of God upon the mount, 16. God speaks with Moses, 19. To the people, 21. Yea and the priest too are again forbidden to approach the mount until they were hallowed, 22. Moses and Aaron only are commanded to go up to the Lord, 24. Which also they do, 25.

1

IN the 1third 2month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, 3the same day came they into the wilderness of 4Sinai.

2

For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before 5the mount.

3

Anda Moses went up 6unto God, and the LORD called unto him out 7of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel;

4

Yeb have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and 8how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you 9unto myself.

5

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice 10indeed, and keep my covenant, thenc ye shall be a peculiard treasure unto me above all people: for 11all thee earth is mine:

6

Andf ye shall be unto me 12a kingdom of priests, and 13an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

7

¶And Moses 14came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces 15all these words which the LORD commanded him.

8

And all the people answered together, and said, Allg that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD.

9

And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee 16in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and 17believe thee 18for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD.

10

¶And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and 19sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,

11

And be ready against the third day: for 20the third day the LORD 21will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.

12

And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Takeh heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch 22the border of it: 23whosoever toucheth the mount 24shall be surely put to death:

13

There shall not an hand touch it, but 25he 26shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: 27when the trumpet soundeth 28long, they shall come up 29to the mount.

14

¶And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and 30sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

15

And he said unto the people, Be ready 31against the third day: comei not at your wives.

16

¶And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, thatj there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, 32and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

17

And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; andk they stood 33at the nether part of the mount.

18

Andl mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19

And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him 34by a voice.

20

And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, 35on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

21

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, 36charge the people, 37lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them 38perish.

22

And let the 39priests also, 40which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them.

23

And Moses said unto the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and 41sanctify it.

24

And the LORD said unto him, Away, 42get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.

25

So Moses went down unto the people, and 43spake unto them.
