1 Under the parable of a vine Christ setteth forth God's government of his church, and exhorteth his disciples to abide in his faith and doctrine: 12 he commandeth them to love one another, according to the great love he had shewed for them: 18 forewarneth them of the hatred and persecution of the world: 26 and telleth them of the testimony which the Holy Ghost, and they also, shall bear to him.
cEvery branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and devery branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
I am the vine, ye are the branches: hHe that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for 1without me ye can do nothing.
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; ufor all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
vYe have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and wordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that xwhatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
yThese things I command you, that ye love one another.
Remember the word that I said unto you, cThe servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; dif they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
