Psalm 89 ©

The psalmist praises God for His bountifulness, and for His faithfulness, also in keeping His covenant made with David (typically representing Christ here) and established with all true believers; as likewise for His great power and care in the behalf of His church; yet complaining nevertheless over the heavy oppressions, which the church of God does undergo, and praying for deliverance.

1

I WILL sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known 3thy faithfulness 4to all generations.

2

5For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish 6in the very heavens.

3

I 7have made a covenant 8with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant,

4

9Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up 10thy throne to all generations. Selah.

5

11Anda the 12heavens shall praise thy wonders, O LORD: thy faithfulness 13also in the congregation of the saints.14

6

For who 15in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who 16among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?

7

God is greatly to be feared 17in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are 18about him.

8

O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong 19LORD like unto thee? or to 20thy faithfulness round about thee?

9

Thou rulest 21the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, 22thou stillest them.

10

Thou hast broken 23Rahab in pieces, as 24one that is slain; thou hast scattered thine enemies with thy strong arm.

11

Theb heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and 25the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.

12

The north and 26the south thou hast created them: 27Tabor and 28Hermon shall 29rejoice in thy name.

13

Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and 30high is thy right hand.

14

Justicec and 31judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercyd and truth shall go before thy face.

15

Blessed is the people 32that know the joyful sound: 33they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance.

16

34In thy name shall they rejoice all the day: and in thy righteousness shall they be exalted.

17

For 35thou art the glory of their strength: and in thy favour our 36horn shall be exalted.

18

37For the LORD is 38our defence; and the Holy One of Israel is our king.

19

Then thou spakest 39in vision 40to thy holy one, and saidst, 41I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted 42one chosen out of the people.

20

I have found David my servant; 43with mye holy oil have I anointed him:

21

With whom my 44hand shall be established: mine arm also shall strengthen him.

22

Thef enemy shall not 45exact upon him; nor the 46son of wickedness afflict him.

23

And I will beat down his foes before his face, and plague them that hate him.

24

But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him: and 47in my name shall 48his horn be exalted.

25

I will set his hand also 49in the sea, and his right hand 50in the rivers.

26

51Heg shall cry unto me, Thou art my father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.

27

Also I will make him my 52firstborn, 53higher than the kings of the earth.

28

My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and 54my covenant shall stand fast with him.

29

His seed also will 55I make to endure for ever, and his throne 56as the days of heaven.

30

Ifh57his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments;

31

If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments;

32

Then will I 58visit their transgression 59with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

33

Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take 60from him, 61nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

34

My covenant will I not break, nor alter the 62thing that is gone out of my lips.

35

Oncei have I sworn 63by my holiness 64that I will not lie unto David.

36

65His seed shall endure for ever, and his 66throne as the sun before me.

37

It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness 67in heaven. Selah.

38

But thou hast 68cast off and abhorred, thou hast been wroth with 69thine anointed.

39

Thou hast made void the 70covenant of thy servant: 71thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.

40

Thou hast broken down all 72his hedges; thou hast 73brought his strong holds to ruin.

41

Allj that pass by the way spoil him: he is a reproach to his neighbours.

42

74Thou hast set up the right hand of his adversaries; thou hast made all his enemies to rejoice.

43

Thou hast also 75turned the edge of his sword, and 76hast not made him to stand in the battle.

44

77Thou hast made 78his glory to cease, and cast 79his throne down to the ground.

45

The days 80of his youth hast thou shortened: thou hast covered him with shame. Selah.

46

81How long, LORD? wilt thou 82hide thyself 83for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?

47

Remember 84how short 85my time is: wherefore hast thou made all men 86in vain?

48

What man is he that liveth, and shall not see 87death? 88shall he deliver hisk soul 89from the hand of the grave? Selah.

49

Lord, where are thy former lovingkindnesses, whichl thou swarest unto David in thy truth?

50

Remember, Lord, 90the reproach of thy servants; how I do bear in my bosom the reproach of 91all the mighty people;

51

Wherewith thine enemies have reproached, O LORD; where-with they have reproached 92the footsteps of thine anointed.

52

93Blessed be the LORD for evermore. 94Amen, and Amen.
