THE
REVELATION
OF
JOHN THE DIVINE*
Revelation 3 ©
1 Christ commands the fifth letter to be written to the angel of the church at Sardis. 2 Whom He exhorts to more watchfulness and carefulness. 3 Or otherwise He threatens to come upon him as a thief in the night. 4 Promises to those who have kept their garments unspotted, that they shall walk with Him, and that He will not blot out their names out of the book of life. 7 After that He enjoins the apostle to write the sixth letter unto the angel of Philadelphia. 8 Whom He praises about his steadfastness. 9 And promises that Jews shall come to worship before his feet, and that He would keep him in the temptation. 12 Promises that He shall make the victor a pillar in the temple of God, and an inhabitant of the new Jerusalem. 14 At last He gives charge for the seventh letter to be written to the angel of the church of Laodicea. 15 Whose lukewarmness He reprehends. 17 And their vain boasting or opinion of riches. 18 He counsels them to buy gold which is tried in the fire, and garments, and eyesalve. 20 Testifies that He knocks at the door, and promises the victor that He will give him to sit at His table and upon His throne.
AND unto 1the angel of the church in 2Sardis write; These things saith 3he that hath thea seven Spirits of God, and theb seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a 4name that thou livest, and art dead.
5Be watchful, and strengthen 6the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works 7perfect 8before God.
Remember therefore 9how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent.c If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee 10asd a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.
Thou hast a few 11names even in Sardis which have not defiled 12their garments; and they shall walk 13with me 14in white: for 15they are worthy.
He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment;e and 16I will not blot out his name outf of the book of life, but Ig will confess 17his name before my Father, and before his angels.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
And to the angel of the church in 18Philadelphia write; These things saith he 19that is holy, he that is true,h he thati hath 20the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an 21open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a 22little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.
Behold, I will make them ofj the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, 23I will make them to come and 24worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.
Because thou hast kept 25the word of my patience, I also will 26keep thee from the hour 27of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.
Behold, I come quickly: 28holdk that fast which thou hast, that no man take 29thy crown.
Him that overcometh will I make 30a pillarl in the temple of my God, and 31he shall go no more out: and 32I will write upon him 33the namem of my God, and the name of the city of my God, whichn is 34new Jerusalem, 35which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him 36my new name.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
And unto the angel of the church of the 37Laodiceans write; These things saith 38theo Amen, 39the faithful and true witness, 40thep beginning of the creation of God;
I know thy works, that thou art 41neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee 42out of my mouth.
Because 43thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and 44blind, and 45naked:
I counsel thee to buy 46of me gold 47tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and 48whiteq raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with 49eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
50Asr many as I love, I 51rebuke and 52chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Behold, 53I stand at the door, and knock: 54if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will 55sup with him, and he with me.
To him that overcometh wills I grant to sit with me 56in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
