Psalm 80 ©
The psalmist bemoans the sad condition of the church in regard that the former manifold mercies of God exhibited unto her were changed now into distresses and persecutions, praying for deliverance out of them, with the promise of thankfulness.
To1 the chief Musician upon 2Shoshannim -Eduth,3 A Psalm 4of Asaph.
Give ear, 5O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest 6Joseph like a flock; 7thou that dwellest between the cherubims, 8shine forth.
Before 9Ephraim and 10Benjamin and 11Manasseh 12stir up thy strength, and come and save us.
13Turn14 us again, O God, anda15cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt thou 16be angry against the prayer of thy people?
17Thou feedest them 18with the bread of tears; and givest them tears to drink in 19great measure.
Thou makest us 20a strife unto 21our neighbours: andb our enemies 22laugh among themselves.
23Turn us again, O God of hosts, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
Thou hast brought a 24vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out 25the heathen, and planted 26it.
Thou 27preparedst room before it, and 28didst cause it to take deep root, and it 29filled the land.
30The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly 31cedars.
32She sent out her boughs 33unto the sea, and her branches 34unto the river.
Why hast thou then broken down 35her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?
36The boar out of the wood doth waste it, and 37the wild beast of the field doth devour it.
38Return, we beseech thee, O God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and 39visit this vine;
And the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the 40branch that 41thou madest strong for thyself.
42It is burned with fire, it is cut down: 43they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
Let 44thy hand be 45upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself.
So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name.
46Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, 47cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.
