Psalm 71 ©
The prophet, being in danger of being overtaken and surprised, avows his trusting in God alone, whom He beseeches for speedy deliverance from his subtle and cruel enemies, according to the favor which he had shown him formerly, even from his youth, giving him always cause of praising His Name, which he likewise promises to do constantly, praying at the same time for perseverance and preservation in his old age, and resting confident thereof, makes promise of solemn thankfulness to God.
IN thee, O LORD, do I puta my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
Deliver me in thy 1righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.
Be thou my strong 2habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given 3commandment to save 4me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.
Deliver me, O my God, out of the 5hand of the wicked, out of the 6hand of the 7unrighteous and 8cruel man.
For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth.
By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he 9that took me out of my mother's bowels: 10my praise shall be continually of thee.
I am as a 11wonder unto 12many; but thou art my strong refuge.
Let my mouth 13be filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day.
Cast me not off in the time of 14old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.
For mine enemies speak against me; and they that 15lay wait for my 16soul take counsel together,
Saying, God hath forsaken him: 17persecute and take him; for there is 18none to deliver him.
O God, be not far from me: O my God, 19make haste for my help.
Letb them be confounded and 20consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my 21hurt.
But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee 22more and more.
My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the 23numbers thereof.
I will 24go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make 25mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.
O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.
Now also 26when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy 27strength unto 28this generation, and thy 29power to 30every one that is to come.
31Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, 32who hast done great things: O God, who is like unto thee!
Thou, which hast shewed me 33great and sore 34troubles, shalt quicken 35me 36again, and shalt bring 37me up again from the 38depths of the earth.
Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me 39on every side.
I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou 40Holy One of Israel.
My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.
My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, 41for they are brought unto shame, that seek my 42hurt.
