THE *BOOK OF
PSALMS.
Psalm 118 ©
The psalmist exhorts all the godly to praise the Lord for His manifold mercies and deliverances, relating to that end how God had delivered him out of the hands of his enemies. At the same time there is a prophecy in this psalm of the coming of the Lord Christ, Whom the most important ones of the people would indeed reject, but the faithful would embrace Him.
O GIVE thanks unto the LORD; 1for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.
Let 2Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
Let 3the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me 4in a large place.
The LORDais 5on my side; 6I will not fear: what can 7man do unto me?
The LORD taketh 8my part 9with them that help me: therefore 10shall I see 11my desire upon them that hate me.
Itb is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.
12All nations compassed me about: but 13in the name of the LORD will I destroy them.
They compassed me about; yea, 14they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
They compassed me about 15like bees; they are quenched 16as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
17Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the LORD helped me.
The LORD is my 18strength and 19song, and is become my salvation.
The 20voice of rejoicing and 21salvation is in 22the tabernacles of the righteous: the 23right hand of the LORD doeth 24valiantly.
The right hand of the LORD 25is exalted: thec right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.
26I shall not die, but live, and 27declare the works of the LORD.
The LORD 28hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.
29Open to me 30the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:
This 31gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.
I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.
Thed32stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
33This is the LORD’S doing; 34it is marvellous in our eyes.
35This is the day 36which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
37Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, 38send now prosperity.
39Blessed be he that cometh 40in the name of the LORD: 41we have blessed you 42out of the house of the LORD.
God is the LORD, which hath shewed us 43light: 44bind the 45sacrifice with cords, even 46unto 47the horns of the altar.
Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.
O 48give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
