THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
*JOHN
John 16 ©
1 Christ foretells His disciples that they shall be persecuted. 5 And comforts them with the promise of the Holy Ghost, Who shall convince the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. 12 And lead them into all truth. 16 Declares that He shall shortly be taken from them, but shall be seen again for a little while. 20 And that their sorrow shall quickly be turned into joy, as the pains of a woman when she has brought forth. 23 Exhorts them to pray in His Name, with the promise that they shall be heard. 28 And declares plainly, without by similitude, that He leaves the world. 29 Which the disciples understand, and are confirmed in their faith. 32 He forewarns them that they shall be scattered, and promises them His peace.
THESE1 things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be 2offended.
Theya shall put you 3out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God 4service.
Andb these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
Butc these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said 5not unto you at the beginning, because I 6was with you.
But 7now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you 8asketh me, Whither goest thou?
But because I have said these things unto you, 9sorrow hath filled your heart.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, 10the Comforter will 11not come unto you; butd if I depart, I will send him unto you.
And when he is come, he will 12reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
13Of sin, because they believe not 14on me;
Of 15righteousness, 16because I go to my Father, and ye see me 17no more;
Of 18judgment, becausee19the prince of this world is 20judged.
I have yet 21many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them 22now.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, 23is come, hef will guide you into 24all truth: forg he shall not speak 25of himself; but whatsoever he shall 26hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
He shall 27glorify me: for he shall receive 28of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
29Allh things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Ai30little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a 31little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
Then said some of his disciples among themselves, 32What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
Now Jesus 33knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye 34shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow 35shall be turned into joy.
36A womanj when she is in travail 37hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she 38remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you 39again, andk your heart shall 40rejoice, and your joy no man 41taketh from you.
And in that day ye shall ask me 42nothing. Verily,l verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask 43the Father in my name, he will give it you.
44Hitherto have ye asked 45nothing in my name: 46ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be 47full.
These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you 48in proverbs, but I shall shew you 49plainly 50of the Father.
51At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I 52say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
For the Father himself loveth you, 53because ye have loved me, andm have believed that I 54came out from God.
In came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I 55leave the world, and go to the Father.
His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
Now are we sure thato thou knowest 56all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: 57by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
Jesus answered them, 58Do ye now believe?
Behold,p the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be 59scattered, every man 60to his own, and shall leave me alone: andq yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
These things I have spoken unto you, thatr61in me ye might have 62peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have 63overcome 64the world.
