THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET
ISAIAH
Isaiah 50 ©
The Lord testifies that He is not the cause of the rejection of the Jews, but their own sins, v. 1, etc. With an account of His power, 2. Christ relates how faithfully He has executed His office, 4. Even with reproach and sufferings, 6. By the help of His heavenly Father, 7. He exhorts the believing Jews to trust in the Lord, 10. And threatens the wicked with hell torments, 11.
THUS saith the LORD, 1Where is 2the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have 3put away? or which of my 4creditors is it 5to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.
Wherefore, when I came, 6was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Isa my hand shortened 7at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke 8I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.
9I clothe the heavens with 10blackness, and I make 11sackcloth their covering.
12The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue 13of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word 14in season to him that is 15weary: 16he wakeneth 17morning by morning, 18he wakeneth mine ear to hear 19as the learned.
¶The Lord GOD 20hath opened mine ear, and Ib was not rebellious, neither turned away back.
21I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them 22that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face 23from shame and 24spitting.
¶For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore 25have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.
26He is near thatc justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: 27who is mine adversary? 28let him come near to me.
Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he 29that shall condemn me? lo, 30they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.
¶ 31Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth 32the voice of his servant, 33that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and 34stay upon his God.
35Behold, all ye 36that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: 37walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. 38This shall ye have 39of mine hand; ye shall lie down 40in sorrow.
