THE EPISTLE
OF
PAUL THE APOSTLE
TO THE
EPHESIANS

Ephesians 5 ©

1 The apostle proceeds in exhortations, and first to mutual love, after the example of God and Christ. 3 Exhorts them further to depart from all impurity, covetousness, (which is idolatry) foolish talking, etc., and declares that such shall not possess the Kingdom of heaven. 8 And seeing they are now in the light, that they must walk as children of the light. 11 And have no more communion with the works of darkness, but reprove them. 15 Exhorts them further, that they would walk prudently, and being wise, redeem the time. 18 That they should not be drunk, but full of the Spirit. 19 That they should sing psalms and hymns to the Lord. 21 Exhorts all in general to be subject one to another in the fear of God. 22 But especially wives, that they be subject to their husbands, as the congregation is to Christ. 25 In like manner, he exhorts husbands to love their wives, even as Christ loved His congregation. 28 And as a man loves his own body. 31 Proves also by God’s institution, that husband and wife are one flesh, and interprets that also of Christ and His congregation. 33 Concluding with an exhortation to husband and wife.

1

BE ye therefore 1followers of God, as dear children;

2

Anda walk in love, asb Christ also hath loved us, andc hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God 2for a sweetsmelling savour.

3

Butd fornication, and all 3uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

4

Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor 4jesting, which are not convenient:e but rather giving of 5thanks.

5

Forf this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, 6who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of 7Christ and of God.

6

Letg no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon 8the children of disobedience.

7

Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

8

Forh ye were sometimes 9darkness, but now are ye 10light in the Lord: walk as 11children of light:

9

(Fori12the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

10

13Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

11

Andj have no fellowship with the 14unfruitful works of darkness, but rather 15reprove them.

12

For it is a 16shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

13

Butk all things that are reproved are made manifest 17by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest 18is light.

14

Wherefore he 19saith, Awakel thou 20that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall 21give thee light.

15

Seem then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

16

Redeemingn the 22time, because 23the days are evil.

17

Wherefore be ye not unwise, buto understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18

Andp be not drunk with wine, 24wherein is excess; but 25be filled with the Spirit;

19

Speakingq to yourselves in 26psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody 27in your heart to the Lord;

20

Givingr thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

21

28Submitting yourselves one to another 29in the fear of God.

22

Wives,s submit yourselves unto your own husbands, 30as unto the Lord.

23

Fort the husband is the head of the wife, evenu as Christ is the head of the church: and 31he is the 32saviour ofv the body.

24

Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands 33in every thing.

25

Husbands,w love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, andx34gave himself for it;

26

That he might 35sanctify and cleansey it 36with the washing of water 37by the word,

27

38That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; butz that it should be holy and without blemish.

28

So ought men 39to love their wives as their 40own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

29

For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

30

Foraa we are 41members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

31

Forab this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and 42they two shall be oneac flesh.

32

43This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

33

44Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her 45husband.
