Elijah flees for Jezebel, v. 1, etc. Is fed and sustained by an angel, 5. Fasting forty days and forty nights, he comes to mount Horeb, 8. Where complaining to God of his distress, is strengthened by Him by means of a special revelation, 9 He receives command from God to anoint Hazael, and Jehu, to be kings, and Elisha to be prophet, 15. Whereunto God also adds comfort, 17. Elisha is called, 19.
AND Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and 1withal how he had slain 2all the prophets with the sword.
Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, 3So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy 4life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.
And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his 5life, and came to 6Beer-sheba, 7which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
¶But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a 8juniper tree: and he requested for himself that 9he might die; and said, 10It is enough; now, O LORD, 11take away my life; for I am not 12better than my fathers.
And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
And he looked, and, behold, there was a 13cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, 14and laid him down again.
And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because 15the journey is too great for thee.
And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in 16the strength of that meat fortya days and forty nights unto Horeb 17the mount of God.
¶And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, 18What doest thou here, Elijah?
And he said, I have been 19very jealous for the LORD 20God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine 21altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; andb I, even I only, am left; and they seek my 22life, to take it away.
And 23he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, 24the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but 25the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire 26a still small voice.
And it was so, when Elijah heard it, 27that he wrapped his face in his 28mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, 29What doest thou here, Elijah?
And he said, 30I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of 31Damascus: and when thou comest, 32anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou 33anoint to be king over Israel: and 34Elisha the son of Shaphat of 35Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet 36in thy room.
And itc shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of 37Hazael shall Jehu 38slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha 39slay.
Yetd40I have left me 41seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath 42not kissed him.
¶So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke 43of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and 44cast his mantlee upon him.
And he 45left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, 46Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will 47follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: 48for what have I done to thee?
And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and 49slew them, and boiled their flesh with 50the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
