THE EPISTLE OF THE
APOSTLE PAUL
TO
TITUS

Titus 2

1Directions given to Titus both for his doctrine and life. 9The duty of servants. 11The gospel teacheth all men to renounce wickedness, and to lead sober, righteous, and godly, lives.

1BUT speak 1thou the things which become 2sound doctrine:

1 Namely, do not do as these deceivers, but as a faithful teacher, leaving such fables, vain utterances, and commandments of men, do preach the doctrine undiluted.

2 See 1 Tim. 1:10; 6:3.

2That the aged men be sober, 3grave, 4temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

3 Or, stately, composed, decent.

4 Or, prudent.

3The aged women likewise, thatathey be 5in behaviour as becometh holiness, not falseb accusers, 6not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

a 1 Tim. 2:9; 1 Peter 3:3.

5 Gr. fashion. Namely, both in apparel and in their entire deportment.

b 1 Tim. 5:13.

6 Gr. not making themselves enslaved unto much wine.

4That 7they may teach the young women to be 8sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

7 They, namely, the elderly women, by whom the young women may, better and with less reproach, be instructed, than by men, namely, in private. For, to teach openly in the congregation is forbidden to women, 1 Cor. 14:34; 1 Tim. 2:12.

8 Or, discreet, as in the following verse.

5To be 9discreet, chaste, 10keepers at home, 11good, obedientc to their own husbands, that the word of God 12be not blasphemed.

9 Or, prudent.

10 That is, not to run idle from house to house, as 1 Tim. 5:13, but to abide at home.

11 That is, kind and of a good disposition.

c Gen. 3:16; 1 Cor. 14:34; Eph. 5:22; Col. 3:18; 1 Peter 3:1.

12 Namely, as is used to be done by the enemies of the truth, who, from the evil conduct of those who embraced God’s Word, took occasion to reproach the Word itself, as if that advocated an evil life, Rom. 2:24.

6Young men likewise exhort to be 13sober minded.

13 Or, prudent, as in verses 2, 4.

7Ind all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: 14in doctrine shewing 15uncorruptness, 16gravity, sincerity,

d 1 Tim. 4:12; 1 Peter 5:3.

14 That is, in propounding and preaching the evangelical doctrine.

15 Or, in sincerity, that is, without mingling any false sophisticated doctrine or human inventions therewith, whereby the pure doctrine is corrupted and falsified.

16 Or, staidness. The former concerns the doctrine itself, and this the manner in which the same must be propounded.

8Sound 17speech, that cannot be 18condemned; thate he 19that is of the contrary part may be 20ashamed, having no evil thing 21to say 22of you.

17 See, 1 Tim. 1:10; 6:3; 2 Tim. 1:13; 4:3; Titus 1:9, 13; namely, what you shall preach publicly, or shall use privately amongst people.

18 Or, not punishable, not damnable, not despicable; which may be understood of the word, as well as of the person of Titus.

e 1 Peter 2:12, 15; 3:16.

19 That is, who is yet a stranger and an enemy to the evangelical doctrine.

20 Namely, in his slanders against the doctrine or the teachers of the Gospel.

21 Namely, with truth.

22 Others read of us, namely us, our ministers of the Gospel.

9Exhortf servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well 23in all things; not 24answering again;

f Eph. 6:5; Col. 3:22; 1 Tim. 6:1, 2; 1 Peter 2:18.

23 Namely, which are not contrary to the commands of the Supreme Lord Jesus Christ. See Acts 4:19; 5:29, and the annotations at Col. 3 on verse 18, on verse 22.

24 Namely, against the commands or reproofs of their masters.

10Not 25purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they 26may adorn 27the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

25 That is, secretly by craft and by way of stealth, getting anything of their masters’ goods to themselves. See of this word, Acts 5:2, 3.

26 Which is done when they practice the same, and follow it in all things.

27 Namely, who commands this, and which they have embraced and profess.

1128For 29the grace of God that bringeth salvation 30hath appeared to 31all men,

28 Now the apostle gives a reason why Titus must exhort all kinds of people, old and young, and even the slaves or servants also, to carry themselves godly.

29 That is, the doctrine of the grace of God shown us by Christ, and contained in the Gospel.

30 Namely, as a light in the darkness of the shadows of the Old Testament, and of the ignorance of heathendom, Isa. 42:7, 16; Acts 26:18; Eph. 5:8; 1 Peter 2:9; 1 John 2:8.

31 That is, all kinds of people, men, women, old, young, free and those in bonds, as appears from what has gone before. See the same, 1 Tim. 2:1, 2, 4. Some join these words all men to the word salvation, in this sense, the grace of God saving all men hath appeared.

12Teaching us that,g32denying ungodlinessh and 33worldly lusts, we should live 34soberly, 35righteously, and 36godly, in this present 37world;

g Eph. 1:4; Col. 1:22; 2 Tim. 1:9.

32 See Mat. 16:24.

h 1 John 2:16.

33 That is, which are found and do reign in worldly and unregenerate men, and are described, 1 Peter 4:3; 1 John 2:16.

34 Namely, in respect to ourselves.

35 Namely, in respect to our neighbor.

36 Namely, in respect to God.

37 Gr. age.

13Lookingi for 38that blessed hope, and the 39glorious 40appearing 41of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

i 1 Cor. 1:17; Philip. 3:20.

38 That is, salvation for which the faithful hope.

39 For this appearing shall occur in great glory. See Mat. 16:27; 19:28; 24:30; 25:31; 1 Peter 4:13.

40 Namely, to judge the quick and the dead. For so is this word taken everywhere. See 2 Thes. 2:8; 1 Tim. 6:14; 2 Tim. 4:1, 8.

41 That is, of Jesus Christ, our great God and Savior; for, both these titles are here ascribed to Jesus Christ. This appears as here is spoken of His glorious appearing to judgment, and as the conjunction of the Greek words also shows. This is a clear demonstration of His Godhead.

14Whoj42gave himself for us, 43that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and 44purify unto himself 45a peculiar people, zealousk of good works.

j Gal. 1:4; 2:20; Eph. 5:2; Heb. 9:14.

42 Namely, unto death.

43 That is, not only to reconcile us unto God, by a perfect satisfaction for our sins through His blood, Eph. 1:7; 1 Peter 1:18; 1 John 1:7; Rev. 5:9, but to deliver us also by His Spirit of regeneration from the dominion of sin and iniquity, Rom. 6:3, etc.; Gal. 5:24; Col. 2:11, 12; 1 Peter 4:1, 2.

44 Namely, by His Spirit, whereby, as by pure water, the faithful are purified from the filthiness of sin, and are separated to be a people of God. See Ezek. 36:25, 26.

45 Gr. periousion; by this word the Greek translators of the Old Testament expound the Hebrew word segullah, Exod. 19:5; it signifies properly that, which is extraordinary, excellent and precious to be laid aside, is to be preserved.

k Eph. 2:10.

15These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all 46authority. Letl no man despise thee.

46 Gr. command. See of this word, Rom. 16:26; 1 Cor. 7:6, 25; 2 Cor. 8:8. That is, show in teaching that you speak as an ambassador of God, Whose commands you must propound with authority and earnestness.

l 1 Tim. 4:12.
