Psalm 99

1The prophet, setting forth the kingdom of God in Zion, 5exhorteth all, by the example of their forefathers, to worship God at his holy hill.

1The LORD 1reigneth; 2let the people tremble: 3he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be 4moved.

1 Namely, over us, that is, He powerfully protects us against our enemies. See Psalm 97:1.

2 Other, therefore the people tremble, and so in the sequel. Other, though the nations be troubled or distracted or frightened.

3 See 1 Sam. 4:4.

4 Namely, for fear, or to do honor to the Lord.

2The LORD is 5great 6in Zion; and he is high above all the people.

5 That is, excellent, glorious, full of majesty.

6 That is, among His people of Israel that was wont to assemble upon the hill where the temple was, and to come to the celebration of God’s worship.

3Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.

4The 7king’s 8strength also loveth judgment; 9thou dost establish 10equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness 11in Jacob.

7 Namely, Christ Jesus.

8 Appearing in the subduing of our enemies.

9 Namely, Who is our King.

10 That is, whatsoever is right and equal. As if he said: Although the Lord is a strong and mighty King, yet He is no tyrant that oppresses His subjects by violence, but He loves righteousness and administers justice and right to everyone.

11 That is, among the people of Israel, the posterity of Jacob.

5Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship 12at his footstool; for 13he is holy.

12 Other, over against his footstool. See the annotation 1 Chron. 28:2. Thus the letter lamed is likewise taken in verse 9, and elsewhere frequently.

13 Namely, God, or the temple; or, which (namely, footstool) is holy.

614Moses and Aaron among 15his priests, and Samuel among them 16that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.

14 As if he said: It shall not be in vain to fall down before the Lord, for, He has ever heard His faithful servants; and so He shall do with you also, especially after that the true Priest and Intercessor Christ shall have made His personal appearance. Moses is put amongst the priests, because he was wont to pray and intercede often for the people and offered likewise, though afterward he remained no ordinary priest. See Exod. 29:11, 16; Jer. 15:1.

15 Or, chieftains, princes. Hebr. cohen. See the annotation on Gen. 41 on verse 45.

16 Namely, Moses and Aaron, as we read in Exod. 32:11, etc.; Num. 14:13, 17, 19; 16:22, 42, 46; 1 Sam. 7:9; 12:19, 23; Jer. 15:1.

7He spake 17unto them in the cloudy pillar: 18they kept 19his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.

17 Namely, to Moses and Aaron, Num. 16:22, 42; though especially to Moses. See Exod. 33:9.

18 Namely, Moses and Aaron.

19 That is, His commandments, whereby He testified what He would have them to do.

8Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God 20that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of 21their 22inventions.

20 That is, Who has forgiven them their sins and not rejected them from Thee.

21 Namely, of the people, for which Moses prayed, Exod. 32:14; 34:35; Num. 14:20, 21, 23. Or, their, namely, of Moses and Aaron; see Num. 20:12; Deut. 3:23, 24, 25. Or, you may understand by the word their as the one as well the other.

22 That is, misdeeds.

923Exalt the LORD our God, and worship 24at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.

23 Namely, by songs of praises and thanksgivings.

24 Or, over against, as verse 5, and here it is understood the hill of Zion, and by that the temple and the ark that was in it.
