Psalm 98

1The Psalmist celebrateth God's salvation toward Israel: 4he exciteth the whole world to join in acclamations of praise, because of God's righteous judgment.

0A Psalm.

1O SING unto 1the LORD 2a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: 3his right hand, and 4his holy arm, hath 5gotten him the 6victory.

1 Namely, our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 See Psalm 33:3.

3 That is, He has conquered and subdued all His enemies, through His Divine power and strength alone. See Isa. 52:10; 53:1; 59:16; 63:5.

4 Or, the arm of his holiness.

5 Or, hath given.

6 Namely, against all His enemies.

2The 7LORD hath made known his salvation: 8his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

7 Namely, Christ.

8 Understand here the righteousness of the Gospel or of faith.

39He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: 10all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

9 Understand in addition: and He hath made good and performed what He had promised to His people Israel, redeeming and freeing them from their sins. See Luke 1:54, 55, 72, 73, 74.

10 That is, all the inhabitants of the world, from one end to the other. So also Isa. 52:10.

4Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, 11all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

11 That is, all ye that dwell on the earth, as Psalm 96:9.

5Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

6With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, 12the King.

12 Namely, our Lord Jesus Christ.

7Let the sea 13roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

13 Hebr. thunder, namely, for joy. These are phrases spoken by similitude to show the exceeding great joy which the faithful all the world over by sea and land are to have, and show forth all manner of ways from and for the publishing of the Gospel. See Psalm 96:11.

8Let the floods clap their 14hands: let the hills be 15joyful together

14 Hebr. with the hand palm. This has regard to the custom of men, who express their joy by clapping of hands and show thereby that they take a most singular pleasure and content in the thing they enjoy. Likewise Psalm 47:1; Isa. 55:12.

15 Or, shout.

9Before 16the LORD; for 17he cometh to judge 18the earth: 19with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people 20with equity.

16 Namely, Christ.

17 That is, He shall come assuredly. Understand this as of the first as well of the second coming of Christ.

18 That is, the inhabitants of the earth.

19 That is, righteously, as Psalm 96:13.

20 Hebr. in rectitude, in the plural.
