1An exhortation to celebrate the greatness and majesty of God, 10and to rejoice in his righteous government of the world.
1 O 1SING unto the LORD a 2new song: sing unto the LORD, 3all the earth.
1 Though David’s name is not expressed, it seems nevertheless that he is the author of this psalm; for this psalm is a part of that song of praise which David made and sung when he brought the ark of the covenant home into his own house out of Obed-edom, 1 Chron. 16:23, and see further in the annotations there.

3 That is, all ye inhabitants of the world.
2Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth 4his salvation from day to day.
4 Namely, salvation or deliverance which He has performed and is performing daily yet.
3Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.
4For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.
5For all the gods of the nations are 5idols: but the LORD made 6the heavens.

6 Understand with this: and also the earth and the sea and all that is therein.
6Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are 7in his sanctuary.

7Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and 8strength.
8 That is, the praise and glory of His strength. See the annotation Psalm 8 on verse 2.
8Give unto the LORD 9the glory due unto his name: 10bring an offering, and come 11into his courts.
9 That is, the honor which properly belongs to Him.
10 By a part of God’s worship and service there is to be understood here the whole.
11 That is, into the courts of the tabernacle or temple. Yet, hereby one must understand all other places where the faithful meet and assemble for the performance of God’s solemn worship and service.

12 The Hebrew word properly signifies such shaking and trembling as comes upon women when they are in travail.
13 That is, all ye dwellers on the earth, ye inhabitants of all the world.
10Say among the heathen that 14the LORD reigneth: 15the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved: he shall judge the people 16righteously.
