1David describeth the general corruption of mankind. 7He wisheth to see the salvation of God.

0To the 1chief Musician upon 2Mahalath, 3Maschil, A Psalm of David.

1 See the first annotation at Psalm 4 in the title.

2 This seems likewise to be a name of a certain kind of instrument, much like the neginoth. See the second annotation at Psalm 5 in the title. Compare the third annotation at Psalm 88 in the title.

3 See the annotation at Psalm 32 in the title.

1THE4 fool hatha said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: thereb is none that doeth good.

4 This psalm agrees with the 14th, except some small alteration, which the Holy Spirit was pleased to make therein. See the annotations there.

a Psalm 10:4; 14:1, etc.

bRom. 3:12.

2God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, toc see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God.

cRom. 3:10.

3Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

4Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread: they have not called upon God.

5There were they in great fear, where 5no fear was: for God hath scattered the 6bones of him 7that encampeth against thee: thou hast put them to shame, because God hath 8despised them.

5 Where they had not the least thought of any possibility to be frightened, being therefore undaunted stout and daring, or, where there were no natural causes or grounds of being or making afraid; for on God they never thought, from Whom nevertheless it was to come upon them. Compare Lev. 26:36; Deut. 28:65; Job 15:21; Prov. 28:1.

6 As it happened to them who are slain in battle or torn by wild beasts, whose bones lie scattered here and there.

7 The prophet addresses his speech here to the congregation of believers, including himself.

8 Namely, your enemies and oppressors.

6Oh that the 9salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! When God bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

9 Hebr. Who will give salvations, that is, perfect, full salvation; according as elsewhere the plural number is taken in this sense. In Psalm 14:7 you have deliverance or salvation, in the singular.
