Psalm 40

1David from his own experience sheweth the benefit of trust in God. 6Obedience the most acceptable sacrifice. 9David's grateful return of praise: 11he prayeth for salvation to himself, and confusion to his enemies.

0To the chief 1Musician, A Psalm of David.

1 See the first annotation at Psalm 4 in the title.

1I WAITED 2patiently for the LORD; and he 3inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

2 Hebr. waiting waited.

3 Or, inclined the ear to me; as Psalm 17:6.

2He brought me up also out of an 4horrible pit, out of the 5miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

4 Hebr. a pit of boisterousness, where the waters roar, ever swelling and bubbling up, and make a continual boisterous noise. He implies hereby that his perils and dangers were so great and many that there was no human recovery possible.

5 Hebr. out of the miry mud. Compare Psalm 69:2; Jer. 38:6, 10. Likewise Job 30 on verse 19.

3And he hath put a 6new song in my 7mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

6 See Psalm 33 on verse 3.

7 He has, as it were, taught me a new song Himself, and thereby stirred me up unto it by His Spirit. Compare Exod. 4 on verse 15; Deut. 18 on verse 18. Likewise Psalm 51:15.

4Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD 8his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to 9lies.

8 So that he trusts and reposes on Him alone.

9 That is, to false, idolatrous, vain, deceitful help, comfort and assurance.

510Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy 11thoughts which are to us-ward:a they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are 12more than can be numbered.

10 Or, great.

11 Understand thoughts of peace, as Jer. 29:11; that is, Thy counsel, to do well unto us, Thou hast revealed by many wonderful benefits.

a toward us

12 Hebr. stronger, namely, in number; as in verse 12.

6Sacrificeb and offering 13thou didst not 14desire; mine 15ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.

b Heb. 10:5.

13 These are the words of the Lord Christ, Whom David by a prophetical spirit thus introduces, speaking unto his Father. See Heb. 10:5, 6, 7.

14 Namely, that Thou, by those sacrifices, would permit Thy righteousness to be made sufficient and to reconcile Thee with sinful people, for such was impossible, Heb. 10:4.

15 That is, engaged Me to Thy service, to take the office of mediation upon Me, and to redeem Thy people from sin; whereunto Thou hast prepared Me a body to offer the same for the sins of the people (as the apostle declares this with the words of the Greek translation, Heb. 10:5, 10). The manner of speaking is borrowed from the practice among the Jews, according to the law of God, about engaging of their servants. See Exod. 21:6; Deut. 15:17.

7Then said I, Lo, 16I come: in the 17volumec of the book it is written of me,

16 Or, am come; with these and the following words the Lord Christ declares His willing obedience to accept and execute the Mediatorship, imposed upon Him by God. See Heb. 10:10.

17 Of the word volume for roll see Ezra 6 on verse 2; Jer. 36 on verse 2; and understand hereby the books of Moses, wherein there are several most excellent prophecies to be found of Christ, the first whereof was made in paradise, Gen. 3:15, and further to the patriarchs, as also were the sacraments and all the offerings and sacrifices so many types of Christ to come. See Luke 24:27; Heb. 8:5, 6; 9:8, 9; 10:1, etc.

8I delight to do thy 18will, O my God: yea, thyd law is 19within my heart.

18 That is, that which is well-pleasing and acceptable unto Thee. See Psalm 143:10; Prov. 10 on verse 32.

d Psalm 37:31; Isa. 51:7.

19 That is, I consider them in My heart and am most fervently disposed to accomplish the same. Compare verse 10; Psalm 37:31.

9I have 20preached 21righteousness in the greate22congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.

20 Or, evangelize, or, have evangelized, and so in the sequel.

21 See Rom. 3:21, 22.

ePsalm 35:18; 111:1.

22 Compare Psalm 22 on verse 22.

10I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

11Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

12For innumerable 23evils have compassed me about: mine 24iniquities have taken hold upon me, 25so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart 26faileth me.

23 That is, troubles, miseries; also verse 14.

24 If this be understood of sins, than David speaks this of himself, and not of the LORD Christ, Who is the immaculate Lamb of God, and has been without sin; though otherwise He took our sins upon Him as Surety to satisfy for them, 2 Cor. 5:21, and to bear the punishment due to them, Isa. 53 verses 5, 6, 8, 10, 11; as the word iniquities may likewise be taken for punishments of iniquities. See Psalm 31 on verse 10. So is likewise the foregoing word evils taken for the evil of punishment, that is, for suffering, miseries, etc.

25 Other, and I could not overlook them, namely, by reason of the multitude.

26 Compare Psalm 38:10.

1327Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me: O LORD, make haste to help me.

27 Compare the following verses with Psalm 70.

14Letf them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my 28soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me 29evil.

fPsalm 35:4, 26; 70:2; 71:13.

28 See 2 Sam. 4 on verse 8.

29 As verse 12.

15Let them be 30desolate for a reward of 31their shame that say unto me, 32Aha, aha.

30 Or, be dismayed.

31 That is, for a recompense of the shame which they sought to bring upon me. Or, for the shame’s sake; or, because of the shamefulness they would seek to fasten upon me. Other, to the end that they may be ashamed. See of the Hebrew word, here rendered reward, Psalm 19 on verse 11.

32 As Psalm 35:21, 25.

16Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be 33magnified.

33 As Psalm 35:27.

17But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord 34thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no 35tarrying, O my God.

34 To help me in due time. See Gen. 8 on verse 1.

35 Hebr. be not behind.
