Psalm 38

David moveth God to take compassion of his sad condition, confessing his sins to have been the cause of it.

0A Psalm of David, to 1bring to remembrance.

1 To remind him of the great distress he was in, and of the mercy of the LORD, Who had delivered him out of it. Compare Psalm 132:1; Isa. 63:7.

1 Oa LORD, 2rebuke me not in thy 3wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

a Psalm 6:1.

2 Compare Psalm 6.

3 Or, indignation.

2For thine 4arrows 5stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

4 He understands his intense sickness by the arrows and the hand of God. See Deut. 32 on verse 23; Job 6 on verse 4.

5 That is, they have been shot into me in such a manner, that they did penetrate deep.

3There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any 6rest in my bones because of my sin.

6 That is, there is no rest, no intermission of pain in all my body. Compare Psalm 35 on verse 10; 51 on verse 8.

4For mine iniquities 7are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

7 Like waves and billows, going over and covering a man’s head, as Psalm 42:7. Thus the prophet enlarges his sins, together with the punishment thereof. Compare Psalm 40:12.

5My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my 8foolishness.

8 Or, inconsiderateness, thoughtlessness, imprudence, whereby he understands his sins and infirmities. Compare verse 3; Psalm 69:5.

6I am 9troubled; I am bowed down greatly; Ib go 10mourning all the day long.

9 Or, misshapen, deformed.

bPsalm 42:9; 43:2.

10 See Psalm 35 on verse 14. This may be understood both of outward signs of mourning in apparel and the inward sorrow of the heart. Or, black, in regard of the deformity of his body by reason of his sickness.

7For my loins are filled with a 11loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh.

11 Other, burning, as if they were roasted, and thereby shrunk and withered.

8I am feeble and sore broken: I have 12roared by reason of the 13disquietness of my heart.

12 I cry mightily like a lion.

13 Or, the roaring, that is, even as a lion or the sea roars (as also the Hebrew word is taken, Isa. 5:30), so is my heart very disquiet and boisterous within me. Other, the sighing of my, etc.

9Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee.

10My heart 14panteth, my 15strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, 16it also is gone from me.

14 Or, beateth.

15 Compare Psalm 40:12.

16 Namely, my eyes; he wants to say that his sight was so spoiled, that it was with him, as if in a manner, he had no eyes at all. Or, understand by they themselves the faculty and the light of his eyes.

11My lovers and my friends stand 17aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

17 That is, they keep themselves at bay, looking upon my misery from a distance, which makes some to conclude that it was the pestilence or some other vile or infectious disease.

1218They also that seek after 19my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak 20mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.

18 Here he means to say: besides all that, mine adversaries do not give up to persecute me; friends forsake and enemies pursue me.

19 That is, that would have me dead. See Exod. 4 on verse 19; 2 Sam. 4 on verse 8.

20 Or, all manner of vexation, malice, mischief, wretchedness.

13But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth.

14Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no 21reproofs.

21 Or, replies, as if I was guilty altogether and had nothing at all to plead for myself.

15For in thee, O LORD, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.

16For I 22said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they 23magnify themselves against me.

22 Namely, by myself, that is, I thought, or I said, namely, in my prayer unto Thee.

23 As Psalm 35:26. See there.

1724For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me.

24 That is, seeing it is thus with me, that according to human likelihood I would have to faint under this burden, therefore it is more needful that Thou helpest me to give no cause of rejoicing to mine enemies. Compare Psalm 35:15; Job 12:5 with the annotations.

18Forc I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

cPsalm 32:5.

19But mine enemies are 25lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are 26multiplied.

25 Hebr. being living, are strong. He wants to say: While I am burdened with grief and pain, they live in prosperity and pleasure, unconcerned, growing fat, big and strong; as David elsewhere often complains.

26 Or, grow great.

20They also that render evil for good are mine 27adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is.

27 As of Satan, which name the devil has from the Hebrew word here used. Compare 2 Sam. 19 on verse 22, and see Job 1 on verse 6.

21Forsake me not, O LORD: O my God, be not far from me.

22Make haste to help me, O Lord my salvation.
