Psalm 28

1David prayeth earnestly for God's help against the wicked: 6he blesseth God for his gracious succour: 9he prayeth for the people.

0A Psalm of David.

1UNTO thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; 1be not silent to me: lest, aif thou be silent to me, I become like themb that go down into the 2pit.

1 Or, hold not thy peace, be not silent from me. Understand, by turning away Thyself, or Thine ears from me, leaving, or abandoning me without speaking to or answering me, and actually manifesting that Thou dost hear me. Compare this manner of speaking with 1 Sam. 7:8; 1 Kings 22 on verse 3; Job 13:13. Humanly spoken of God, Who is said to carry Himself as deaf, to be silent or hold His peace and not answer, when as yet He forbears to show actual help and deliverance that He has heard the prayers of His own. Other, hold, or carry not thyself as deaf against me; and so again presently: silent against me, etc. Compare Job 13:13 with the annotation.

a Psalm 143:7.

bPsalm 30:3.

2 That is, into the grave, as dead persons. Or, as frightened men and beasts are easily apt to fall into some pit or hole and perish there.

2Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my 3hands 4toward thy holy oracle.

3 As it often happens in praying, as a sign of the lifting up of the heart unto God, and expecting of a blessing from Him through the Messiah. Compare 1 Kings 8 on verse 22; Psalm 88:9; 141:2; Lam. 2:19; 3:41.

4 That is, toward Thy holy oratory, where the ark of the covenant is a type of the Messiah. See 1 Kings 6 on verse 5.

35Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, whichc speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.

5 That is, destroy me not, draw me not away to the grave. Compare Psalm 26 on verse 9, and see Job 21:33; 24:22; Ezek. 32:20, where the Hebrew word is used in the same sense.

cPsalm 12:2; Jer. 9:8.

4Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.

5Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not 6build them up.

6 That is, not exalt them to a firm or lasting state and condition; likewise, not propagate them nor extend their generation. Compare Gen. 16 on verse 2; Job 22 on verse 23; Jer. 24:6; 31:28; likewise Prov. 14 on verse 1.

67Blessed be the LORD, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.

7 Or, Praised.

7The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

8The LORD is 8their strength, and he is the 9saving strength of his anointed.

8 Not mine only, but also of His entire church, of all the faithful.

9 Or, deliverances, victories of His anointed, that is, He Who has so often saved and delivered me, His anointed, by His power; or, the strength of salvations or of the perfect salvation (that is, the perfect saving Strength) is His Anointed, namely, the Messiah, the LORD Christ, typified by David.

910Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: 11feed them also, and 12lift them up for ever.

10 Or, deliver, give salvation to.

11 As a shepherd does his sheep. See Psalm 23.

12 Or, carry them.
