Psalm 26

David in confidence of his integrity resorteth unto God.

0A Psalm of David.

1JUDGE1 me,a O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide.

1 Against mine enemies and persecutors; show it by the deed, that Thou judgest my cause to be righteous.

a Psalm 7:8.

22Examine me, O LORD, and 3prove me; try my reins and my heart.

2 Compare Psalm 17 on verse 3.

3 See Gen. 22 on verse 1.

3For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy 4truth.

4 See Psalm 25 on verses 5, 10.

4 Ib have not sat with 5vain persons, neither 6will I go in with 7dissemblers.

bJob 31:5; Psalm 1:1.

5 Hebr. men, people of vanity or falsehood.

6 So the Hebrew word is likewise taken, Joshua 23:7.

7 That is, double-dealing, dissemblers, hypocrites, who go about with covered mischievous practices.

5I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked.

6I will 8wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD:

8 Implying that he did so perform his outward service of God, that he led a holy life therewithal, whereas the hypocrite practiced the contrary. Concerning the washing of hands as a sign of innocence, see Deut. 21:6; Mat. 27:24. Some do understand it of the ordinary washing of those who came to the altar (and going into the tabernacle, were in a manner to compass or go round about the altar, as follows), Exod. 40:32. Both meanings regard the cleansing from sins, innocence and blamelessness. Compare Isa. 1:15, 16; 1 Tim. 2:8.

7That I may 9publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

9 That is, to sing out loud, that it may be heard well. So Psalm 66:8; 106:2. Compare 1 Chron. 15:16.

8LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine 10honour dwelleth.

10 That is, wherein Thou dwellest Thyself, Who art a God of honor and glory.

911Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with 12bloody men:

11 Or, Take not away, that is here, gathering ravage not, or rifle not, as one first gathers together what one ravages or rifles away afterwards. The meaning is: Do not destroy me with the wicked with whom and their practices I have no share nor fellowship, as follows. Thus the Hebrew word, which signifies to gather, is used for removing, ravaging away, Gen. 30:23; Isa. 4:1; Jer. 8:13; 16:5, and then for dying, perishing, losing one’s life. See Judges 18 on verse 25; 1 Sam. 15:6; Isa. 57:1; Ezek. 34:29. Compare likewise Gen. 25 on verse 8; Psalm 28:3. Sometimes it is also used for kindly receiving into house, or taking under roof or cover, gathering, receiving. See Num. 12:14; Joshua 20:4; Judges 19:15; Psalm 27:10; Jer. 47 on verse 6 and compare Mat. 23:37.

12 Hebr. men of bloods, that is, bloodthirsty, murdering men, as Psalm 5:6. See there.

1013In whose hands is mischief, and their right hand is full of bribes.

13 That is, who are at work on villainies or mischievous enterprises. Compare Job 11:14 together with the annotation.

11But as for me, I will walk in mine integrity: redeem me, and be merciful unto me.

12My foot standeth in an 14even place: in the 15congregations will I bless the LORD.

14 Hebr. in, or upon the right, plain, or even. Thus the Hebrew word (signifying evenness, straightness or directness, opposed to crookedness, unevenness, Isa. 40:4) is taken for plain, even, level ground, Deut. 3:10; Jer. 21:13.

15 Implying, that, being assured of a happy issue as if it was before the eyes, he was ready, not only in private but also in public before the congregation, to give thanks to God that He had kept and preserved him in so many dangers and temptations of soul and body, and with regards to both, shall have been placed as upon an even and sure place.
