Psalm 20

1The church prayeth for the king's good success in the day of trouble, 6and expresseth a confidence in God's succour.

0To the 1chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

1 See the first annotation at Psalm 4 in the title.

1THE LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the 2name of the God of Jacob 3defend 4thee;

2 See 2 Sam. 6 on verse 2, and compare below, verse 8.

3 Hebr. properly: lift thee up or exalt thee.

4 Or, set thee in an high retreat. Where you may be safe and secure against the force and violence of the enemy. See 2 Sam. 22 on verse 3; that is, He protects and defends you.

2Send thee 5help from the 6sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

5 Whereby you may be helped.

6 Where was the ark of the covenant (the type of the Lord Christ), upon mount Zion.

37Remember all thy offerings, and accept thy 8burnt sacrifice; 9Selah.

7 Other, He smell, that is, He accepts, is well-pleased, remembering His promises and your prayers. See Lev. 2 on verse 2; Hosea 14 on verse 8.

8 Showing by some token that it is acceptable unto Him. See Lev. 9:24; 2 Sam. 24 on verse 23; 1 Chron. 21:26. Other, He maketh thy burnt offering fat, that is, He is pleased with it, as being offered of the best with sincere affection.

9 See Psalm 3 on verse 2.

4Grant thee according to thine own 10heart, and 11fulfil all thy counsel.

10 That is, according to your own wish and heart’s desire, that your purpose may succeed and prosper.

11 That is, effect it, as follows.

512We will rejoice in 13thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will 14set up our banners: the LORD 15fulfil all thy petitions.

12 Here the church shows her confidence of being heard and obtaining the victory.

13 That thou, O king, shalt receive of God, or, that Thou, O God, shalt bestow upon our king. Or, thy victory (and so in the sequel) which God shall grant thee. See 2 Sam. 8 on verse 6.

14 Or, let fly, carry, as a sign of courage and confidence of victory and triumph, and that to the honor and glory of our God and to the terror of our enemies. Compare Psalm 60:4; Cant. 2:4; 5:10; 6:4; likewise Num. 2:2, 3, etc. with the annotations. In the Hebrew there is a word as if one would say: we shall carry the banner.

15 Or, shall fulfill.

6Now know I that the LORD 16saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his 17holy heaven with the 18saving strength of his right hand.

16 Or, hast delivered, given victory unto, that is, I am as confident, by reason of His promises, that God shall give him victory, as if he had obtained it already.

17 That is, out of His holy heaven, which is so called, because God, Who is holiness Himself, is said to dwell therein. Hebr. the heaven of his holiness. Psalm 5:7.

18 Other, the salvation of his right hand shall be with power, that is, stretching forth powerfully His right hand to direct the victory for His anointed.

719Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

19 Our enemies make mention, the one of the multitude of their iron chariots, the other of the quantity of their horses, wherein they confide and trust, but we, etc.

8They are 20brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.

20 As Sisera, Judges 5:27.

921Save, LORD: let the king 22hear us when we call.

21 Or, grant salvation, victory, as verse 6.

22 Or, the king hear us, namely, the heavenly King, our Lord Jesus Christ, typified by David.
