Psalm 2

1The kingdom of Christ. 10Kings are exhorted to accept it.

1WHYa do the 1heathen 2rage, and the people imagine a 3vain thing?

a Acts 4:25.

1 Or, nations, both Jews and Gentiles. See Acts 4:27.

2 Or, stir, make commotions, insurrections, run tumultuously together. The Hebrew word can be taken for gathering together, keeping of conventicles, and likewise for raging, being turbulent and tumultuous, as is to be gathered by Psalm 55:14; 64:2; Dan. 6:7.

3 Vain attempts, whereby they shall not be able to frustrate the counsel of God, but bring themselves into danger of their own destruction.

2The kings of the earth set themselves, and the 4rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his 5anointed, saying,

4 Or, counselors.

5 Or, Messiah, namely, the Lord Christ, that is, the Anointed, Whose type David was, in his being anointed and enthroned into the kingdom.

3Let us 6break 7their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

6 Or, pull down, tear away; also Jer. 5:5.

7 Namely, of God and of His Anointed, together of Their ministers, whereby they endeavor to bind us under the yoke of Christ and the obedience of His Gospel. Compare 2 Cor. 10:5. Bands were a sign of subjection or bondage. See Psalm 107:14; Jer. 2:20; 27:2, 3, 5, 6.

4He that 8sitteth in the heavens shall 9laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

8 Or, dwelleth, as Judge. See Psalm 9:7, 8; 29:10; 55:19.

9 Spoken of God after the manner of men to show how God slights the counsels and practices of the enemies of Christ. See Job 5 on verse 22.

510Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore 11displeasure.

10 When they bring about their devices against Christ, He shall give them to understand and to feel His wrath by afflictions upon them in such a manner as if He says to them again and again that He is highly enraged against them.

11 Or, burning wrath.

612Yet have I 13set my king upon my holy 14hill of Zion.

12 These are the words of God the Father, of His Son Jesus Christ.

13 Hebr. properly, poured over, namely, with oil, that is, anointed.

14 Hebr. the hill of my holiness. Or, where I (Whose Self is Holiness) have Mine abode, namely, My church, typified by the hill of Zion, where the ark of the Lord and David’s royal palace stood, and afterwards, close to it upon the hill Moriah, the temple with the worship service. See Isa. 60:14; Heb. 12:22; Rev. 14:1.

715I will declare 16the 17decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thoubart my Son; 18this day have I begotten thee.

15 These are the words of the Son of God.

16 Or, of the decree. The Hebrew particle el is sometimes taken for of. See Job 42 on verse 7. As if one would say: Concerning this or that; that is, of this or that matter. See likewise Psalm 59 on verse 17. Other, I shall relate or rehearse the decree, or, commandment, or, according to the commandment, namely, which My father gave Me.

17 Or, statute, ordinance, which the Father made in the behalf of Me, as His only begotten and eternal Son; as is further declared in the sequel; being the foundation upon which God established Him Head and Lord over His church. See of this decree verses 6, 8, etc. Compare Philip. 2:6, 9, etc.; Col. 1:15, 16, 17, 18.

b Acts 13:33; Heb. 1:5; 5:5.

18 This must be understood of the eternal, incomprehensible, divine generation of the Son by the Father. See Heb. 1:5. This truth and evidence has variously been manifested in the Old, but principally in the New Testament, and most convincingly by His resurrection from the dead. See Acts 13:32, 33; Rom. 1:4.

819Ask of me, andc I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the 20uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

19 See John 12:28, and John 17; Heb. 5:7, 9.

c Psalm 22:27; 72:8.

20 That is, not only the Jews, but all the inhabitants of the earth shall be subjected to Thy Kingdom; of whom Thou shalt save the faithful and deal with the obstinate as follows. As for the manner of speaking used here, compare Lev. 25:46; Isa. 14:2; Zeph. 2:9.

9Thoud shalt break them with a 21rod of iron; thou shalt dash them 22in pieces like a 23potter’s vessel.

d Rev. 2:27; 19:15.

21 Or, staff, that is, thou shalt destroy the disobedient and rebellious by Thy Divine power and righteous judgments.

22 So that the pieces shall be scattered here and there. See Judges 7 on verse 19, and compare Isa. 30:14; Jer. 13:13, etc.

23 Hebr. of a fashioner, that is, of a potter.

10Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: 24be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

24 Or, be disciplined, be corrected. See of the Hebrew word Prov. 7 on verse 22.

11Serve the LORD with 25fear, and 26rejoice with trembling.

25 With filial fear and reverence, standing in awe and fearing the Lord, as good children do to their good father.

26 In regard of the great salvation, which is proposed unto you by this great and gracious God, beyond and against all your deserving, for to be apprehended and enjoyed by faith in His only begotten Son, Whose despisers shall fearfully perish. Compare Hosea 11:10, 11; Philip. 2:12.

1227Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the 28way, when his wrath is kindled but 29a little. Blessedeare all they that put their trust in him.

27 That is, honor Him as Mine eternal Son, and receive Him for your King, believe in Him, and be obedient to Him. Compare Gen. 41 on verse 40; 1 Sam. 10:1.

28 Or, on the way, that is, in the midst of your turmoil and disobedience.

29 Or, suddenly, hastily, or, a short time. See 2 Chron. 12:7; Psalm 81:14; Isa. 26:20. Other, for his anger shall kindle shortly.
