Psalm 145

1David extolleth God's mighty power and renown; 7he celebrateth God's goodness, 11the glory and eternity of his kingdom, 14his providence, 17justice, and holiness, 18and his especial regard for the righteous.

0David's Psalm of 1praise.

1 Or, A Psalm. This psalm alone bears this title; nevertheless the entire book of psalms has from this word its name.

1I WILL extol thee, my God, O 2king; and I will bless thy name for ever and ever.

2 Thou, Who art the only true and almighty God.

2Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

3Great is thea LORD, and 3greatly to be praised; and hisb greatness is unsearchable.

a Psalm 18:3; 150:2.

3 See the annotation on Psalm 48 on verse 1.

b Job 5:9.

44One generationc shall praise thy works to another, and 5shall declare 6thy mighty acts.

4 The word generation implies here and elsewhere all men living in one and the same century.

c Deut. 4:9; 6:7.

5 Namely, the generations. Also verses 6 and 7.

6 That is, Thy powerful acts, and so verse 12. Mat. 13:58.

57I will speak of the glorious honour of thy majesty, and of thy wondrous works.

7 The prophet does this from verse 12 to the end of the psalm.

6And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.

7Theyd shall 8abundantly utter 9the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness.

d Psalm 119:171.

8 Hebr. bring forth like a fountain or bubble forth, flow forth, that is, praise and celebrate with all the strength of tongue and lungs. See Psalm 19 on verse 2; 45:1.

9 That is, the great benefits shown and performed at all times unto our forefathers and us.

8The LORD is gracious,e and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.

eExod. 34:6, 7; Num. 14:18; Psalm 86:15; 103:8.

9The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are 10over all his works.

10 Namely, of those who are made able to partake of His mercy. Other, above.

10All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints 11shall bless thee.

11 That is, praise and thank Thee; though in another manner than the rest of the creatures, having an inward feeling and witness that Thou art their Father and Benefactor. See Gen. 14:20.

11They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power;

12To make known to the sons of men 12his 13mighty acts, and the glorious majesty 14of his kingdom.

12 Namely, of God.

13 That is, the powerful acts, as verse 4.

14 Namely, of God, as verse 5.

13Thy kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and thy dominion 15endureth throughout all generations.

15 That is, it endures from time to time, or unto all times through all successions.

14The LORD upholdeth all 16that fall, and raiseth up 17all those that be bowed down.

16 That is, all those who are weak and feeble, whether in body or in spirit.

17 That is, all those who are oppressed and bowed down under the heavy cross or the load of sins.

1518The eyesf of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat 19in due season.

18 Namely, of all animals, or creatures that have living bodies.

fPsalm 104:27.

19 Or, in due time. Other, in their time; that is, in convenient time and season, as Psalm 104:27.

16Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the 20desire of every living thing.

20 That is, according as Thou art pleased, or to their satisfaction. Other, well-pleasing, that is, with gifts and goods, flowing and proceeding from Thy good will and pleasure.

17The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy 21in all his works.

21 That is, in whatsoever He does.

18The LORD 22is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him 23in truth.

22 Namely, to help or to deliver them, according to His kindness and compassion towards them.

23 That is, with confidence, uprightly, in sincerity, earnestly incessantly, from the bottom of their hearts, without hypocrisy and without superstition. Compare herewith, Deut. 4:7; John 4:24.

1924He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

24 Thus He honors them who honor Him, 1 Sam. 2:30. Nevertheless, such a well-pleasing, pleasure and desire is to be understood here which proceeds out of a true faith and becomes those that fear God, 1 John 3:22; 5:14.

20The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.

21My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD: and let 25all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.

25 That is, all nations, all people, as Isa. 44:3; Ezek. 36:27; Joel 2:28.
