Psalm 124

The church blesseth God for a miraculous deliverance.

0 A1 Song of degrees of David.

1 See Psalm 120 in the title.

1IF it had not been2 the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say;

2 Or, Had not the LORD that was with us, namely, done it or stood between or hindered it. And so in the next verse.

2If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us:

3Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

4Then 3the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream 4had gone 5over our soul:

3 See the annotation 2 Sam. 22 on verse 17.

4 Namely, to take our life.

5 That is, over our persons.

5Then 6the proud waters had gone over our soul.

6 That is, great, mighty, boisterous, as Job 38:11.

6Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

7Oura soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers:b7the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

a Prov. 6:5.

7 That is, God has defeated and confounded their wiles and devices, whereby they meant to entrap and to shame us.

8Ourc help 8is 9in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

cPsalm 121:2.

8 Or, be.

9 That is, in or upon the Lord.
