Psalm 121

The great safety of the godly, who put their trust in God's protection.

0 A1 Song of degrees.

1 See Psalm 120 in the title.

1I WILL lift up mine eyes 2unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

2 Namely, of the land of promise, which was a pledge of God’s favor to His people; and here you are to understand especially the hills of Zion and Moriah, where God showed forth His presence in a most peculiar manner. See Psalm 87:1.

23My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

3 Hereby he declares his previous words, giving to understand, that indeed it was not properly from any hills or mountains that he expected his help or deliverance, but from the LORD, Who is the Lord, not only of the land of Canaan, but of the entire world.

34He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: 5he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

4 Here the prophet directs his speech unto himself, as in Psalm 103 and 104; or, else to his subjects, assuring them of the tenderness of God towards them.

5 That is, the Lord, Who keeps you, shall in no wise neglect anything tending to your best.

4Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is 6thy shade upon thy right hand.

6 That is, thy Defender and Protector, may be compared to a shade or cover to hide one from danger, Psalm 109:31; 110:5; Isa. 4:6; 25:4. See the annotation Num. 14:9.

6The 7sun shall not 8smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

7 The meaning of this verse is: God shall cover you as with a cloud, as He did of old to your forefathers, coming out of Egypt, Exod. 13:21; Psalm 78:14; Isa. 49:10; Rev. 7:15, 16.

8 Namely, with his beams. Or, pierce. See Gen. 8:21.

79The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

9 Some take this and the next verse as a wish, thus: The LORD preserveth thee, etc.

8The LORD 10shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

10 That is, He shall guide and guard thee in all thy affairs, in all thy undertakings. See Deut. 28:6. See also the similar expressions, 2 Sam. 3:25; 2 Chron. 1:10; Acts 1:21.
