Psalm 112

1The blessedness and security of the godly: 10the wicked shall repine thereat.

1PRAISE ye the LORD. Blessedais the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

a Psalm 1:1, 2.

21His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

1 That is, his children, as Psalm 21:10.

3Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and 2his righteousness endureth for ever.

2 That is, his godliness and piety, together with the fruits thereof. See verse 9. Or, the everlasting reward of the same, which he is to receive by grace.

4Unto the upright there ariseth 3light in the darkness: 4he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

3Light signifies here and elsewhere comfort, peace, joy, help, deliverance; as darkness, adversity, misery, sorrow, grief, Esther 8:16; Job 30:26; Psalm 107:10.

4 Namely, God, as Psalm 111:4. Or, he, namely, the godly man, as verse 5.

55A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: 6he will guide his affairs with discretion.

5 Or, Good is the man that, etc.

6 Other, he shall maintain his cause in the right or judgment.

6Surely he shall 7not be moved for ever: the righteous 8shall be in everlasting remembrance.

7 He wants to say: Although it happens that an honest pious man do now and then meet with adversities, yet he shall never be overthrown and cast down as such, as to lie down for ever without standing up again. See Psalm 15 on verse 5.

8 With God and all the godly, where his memory will always be honorably entertained.

7He shall 9not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart 10is fixed, trusting in the LORD.

9 Whether it be that men speak evil of him without cause (for he has a good conscience); or that there come bad news to his ears (for he trusts in God).

10 See the annotation in Psalm 51 on verse 10.

8His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire 11upon his enemies.

11 Namely, his delight or the judgment of God. See of the like abrupt kind of expression Psalm 22 on verse 17; 54:7.

912He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; 13his righteousness endureth for ever; 14his horn shall be exalted with honour.

12 Namely, his wealth, without hoping for any return, Luke 6:35. See also 2 Cor. 9:9.

13 That is, he never grows weary of doing good and of bringing forth fruits of righteousness. Compare with verse 3.

14 That is, honor and power. See Deut. 33 on verse 17; 1 Sam. 2:1; Psalm 89:17, 24; 92:10.

10The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: 15the desire of the wicked shall perish.

15 That is, he shall not obtain that which he longs after. See Prov. 10:24, 28; 13:9.
