Numbers 7

1The offering of the princes at the dedication of the tabernacle, 4which is disposed of among the Levites. 10, 12, &c. The offerings of the princes individually at the dedication of the altar. 89God speaketh to Moses from the mercy seat.

1AND it came to pass 1on the day that Moses had fully set up thea tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them;

1 Understand the first day of the first month of the second year after their exodus out of Egypt. See Exod. 40:17, 18.

a Exod. 40:18.

2That the 2princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered, offered:

2 See Num. 1 on verse 16.

3And they brought their offering before the LORD, six 3covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they 4brought them before the tabernacle.

3 That is, which were arched, vaulted with their covering for the better keeping of things to be carried in there.

4 Other, offered the same.

4And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

5Take it of them, that they may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to 5every man according to his service.

5 Namely, unto each family of the Levites, that is, to the Gershonites, the Kohathites and the Merarites, whose offices and charges were described previously in Numbers 3 and 4.

6And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites.

7Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service:

8And 6four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, 7under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.

6 The reason why he gave the Merarites more wagons and oxen than to the Gershonites see Num. 3 on verse 36.

7 That is, under his direction and inspection. See Gen. 41 on verse 35.

9But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service 8of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that 9they should bear upon their shoulders.

8 These were expressed in Num. 4:4, 5, 6, etc.

9 See Num. 4 on verse 15.

10¶And the princes offered 10for dedicating of the altar in the day that it was anointed, even the princes offered their offering 11before the altar.

10 The Hebrew word properly signifies the action whereby something is consecrated to the LORD for a singular use by certain ceremonies, 2 Chron. 7:9; Ezra 6:16 and here in the sequel.

11 Namely, the altar of burnt offering.

11And the LORD said unto Moses, 12They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for the dedicating of the altar.

12 Hebr. a prince upon one day, a prince upon one day shall offer their offering. See of this manner of speaking Gen. 7 on verse 2.

12¶And he that offered his offering the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, 13of the tribe of Judah:

13 That is, he did not offer particularly for himself, but in the name and on behalf of the whole tribe of Judah. The same is likewise to be understood of the following princes, that they have offered for their tribe.

14 Of the value of half a rix dollar, that is, once as much as the common or civil shekel. See Gen. 20 on verse 16 and Gen. 23 on verse 15.

15 See Lev. 2 on verse 1 on the meat offering.

14One 16spoon of ten shekels of 17gold, full of incense:

89And when Moses was gone into the 33tabernacle of the congregation to speak 34with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, 35from between the two cherubims: 36and he spake unto him.

33 Understand when the same was dedicated and consecrated to the service of the Lord. Before that time God spoke to Moses upon Mount Sinai, and elsewhere also.

34 Namely, with the Lord.

35 Therefore God is said to sit upon or dwell between the cherubims, 1 Sam. 4:4; 2 Kings 19:15; Psalm 80:1.

36 Namely, according as He had promised, Exod. 25.22.
