MOSES,

Numbers 34

1The borders of the land. 16The names of the men which shall divide the land.

1AND the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land of Canaan; (this is the land that shall 1fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan with the 2coasts thereof:)

1 Which shall fall to your share by lot, or be divided amongst you.

2 This is described in the sequel. Compare herewith Gen. 10 on verse 19; Gen. 15 on verse 18; Exod. 23:31; Deut. 1:7; 11:24; Joshua 1:4.

3Thena your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin 3along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the 4salt sea eastward:

a Joshua 15:1.

3 That is, all along the borders or frontiers of the Edomites. See Joshua 15:1.

4 Otherwise called the Dead Sea. See Gen. 14 on verse 3.

4And your border shall turn from the south to the ascent of 5Akrabbim, and pass on to Zin: and the 6going forth thereof shall be 7from the south to Kadesh-barnea, and shall go on to 8Hazar-addar, and pass on to 9Azmon:

5 That is, of scorpions; whereof this place perhaps obtained the name. See Deut. 8:15. This was at the south end of the salt sea and the east end of mount Edom.

6 That is, the going forth from these borders.

7 Other, against.

8 These two places are joined together here, as being very near together. Compare Joshua 15:3, where they are separated from each other, and the first is called Hezron. The maps place them both on the north side of mount Edom, not far from Azmon.

9 Situated at the west end of mount Edom, not far from Gerar.

5And the border shall fetch a compass from Azmon unto the river 10of Egypt, and the goings out of it shall be 11at the sea.

10 Which divides Egypt from the land of Canaan. Compare Gen. 15 on verse 18. Other, to the vale, or, valley of Egypt; for, there were several boggy plains.

11 That is, toward the west. See Gen. 12 on verse 8.

6And as for the 12western border, ye shall even have the 13great sea for a border: this shall be your west border.

12 Hebr. sea; and so in the sequel.

13 Understand the Mediterranean Sea, called the great sea in comparison to other waters and seas or lakes which were and in about the Jewish land.

7And this shall be your north border: from the great sea ye shall point out for you mount 14Hor:

14 This was not mount Hor on which Aaron died, Num. 33:38, but another, also called Hermon, at the west end of mount Lebanon, by comparing Joshua 13:5 with this and the next verse. As mount Hermon has had several names, this appears from Deut. 3:9; 4:48. Some take it for a mountain situated at the sea side, pointing out like a head, or cape, as we call it now.

8From mount Hor ye shall point out your border unto the entrance of 15Hamath; and the goings forth of the border shall be to 16Zedad:

15 A famous royal city, at the foot of mount Lebanon. See Gen. 10:18; Num. 13:21; Joshua 13:5; Judges 3:3; 2 Sam. 8:9; 1 Kings 8:65; 2 Kings 14:25, 28; 17:24, 30; 23:33; Jer. 49:23; Ezek. 47:16, 17; 48:1; Amos 6:2; Zech. 9:2.

16 This and the following places extended along mount Lebanon down from Hamath, then by the west side of Jordan, where it begins, unto the sea of Chinnereth or Gennesaret.

9¶And the border shall go on to Ziphron, and the goings out of it shall be at Hazar-enan: this shall be your north border.

10And ye shall point out your east border from Hazar-enan to 17Shepham:

17 Also, as some perceive, called Siphmoth, 1 Sam. 30:28.

11And the coast shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall descend, and shall reach unto the 18side of the sea of 19Chinnereth eastward:

18 Hebr. shoulder.

19 Afterwards called Gennesaret, well known in the evangelical history. See also Deut. 3 on verse 17.

12And the border shall go down 20to Jordan, and the goings out of it shall be at the salt sea: this shall be your land with the coasts thereof round about.

20 Or, along the Jordan, namely, where and so as the same river run down from the sea of Chinnereth and falls at last into the salt sea.

13And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, This is the land which ye shall inherit by lot, which the LORD commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half tribe:

14For the tribe of the children of Reuben according to the house of their fathers, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to the house of their fathers, have received their inheritance; and half the tribe of Manasseh 21have received their inheritance:

21 Or, has.

15The two tribes and the half tribe have received their inheritance on this side Jordan near Jericho eastward, toward the 22sunrising.

22 Or, toward the rising.

16And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

17Thesebare the names of the men which shall divide the land unto you: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun.

b Joshua 14:1.

18And ye shall take one prince 23of every tribe, to divide the land by inheritance.

23 Hebr. one chieftain, or, prince, one chieftain out of a tribe.

19And the names of the men are these: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

20And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud.

21Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.

22And the prince 24of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bukki the son of Jogli.

24 Or, of the tribe of the children of Dan, one prince, namely, Bukki, etc., and so in the sequel.

23The prince of the children of Joseph, for the tribe of the children of Manasseh, Hanniel the son of Ephod.

24And the prince of the tribe of the children of Ephraim, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan.

25And the prince of the tribe of the children of Zebulun, Elizaphan the son of Parnach.

26And the prince of the tribe of the children of Issachar, Paltiel the son of Azzan.

27And the prince of the tribe of the children of Asher, Ahihud the son of Shelomi.

28And the prince of the tribe of the children of Naphtali, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.

29These are they whom the LORD 25commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

25 Or, appointed, has ordained to, etc. Compare 2 Sam. 6 on verse 21; 2 Sam. 7 on verse 11, etc.
