THE FOURTH BOOK OF

MOSES,
called
N U M B E R S

Numbers 15

1The law of the meat offering, and the drink offering, with the sacrifices, 14in which the stranger is included. 17The law of the first of the dough for an heave offering. 22The sacrifice of the congregation for sins of ignorance. 27The sacrifice of a private person for the same. 30The punishment of presumption. 32The sabbath breaker is stoned. 37The law of fringes.

1AND the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the 1land of your habitations, which I give unto you,

1 The land of Canaan wherein ye are to take up your habitation hereafter.

3And will make an offering by fire unto the LORD, a burnt offering, or a sacrifice 2ina performing a vow, or in a freewill offering, or in your solemn 3feasts, to make ab sweet savour unto the LORD, of the herd, or of the flock:

2 That is, having set something apart which ye vowed to the LORD by way of thankfulness, or, etc.

a Lev. 22:21.

3 In the sacrifices which were to be offered according to the law of God at the solemn feasts.

b Exod. 29:18.

4Then shall he that offereth his offering unto the LORD bring ac meat offering of a 4tenth deal of flour mingled with the 5fourth part of an hin of oil.

c Lev. 2:1; 6:14.

4 See Lev. 14 on verse 10.

5 See Lev. 19 on verse 36.

5And the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering shalt thou prepare with the burnt offering or sacrifice, for one lamb.

6Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare for a meat offering two tenth deals of flour mingled with the third part of an hin of oil.

7And for a drink offering thou shalt offer the third part of an hin of wine, for a sweet savour unto the LORD.

8And when thou preparest a 6bullock for a burnt offering, or for a sacrifice in performing a vow, or peace offerings unto the LORD:

6 Hebr. a son of a bullock. And so in the sequel.

9Then shall 7he bring with a bullock a meat offering of three tenth deals of flour mingled with half an hin of oil.

7 He who intends to offer the sacrifice; the personal pronoun is changed here: thou into he.

10And thou shalt bring for a drink offering half an hin of wine, for an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

11Thus shall it be done for one bullock, or for one ram, or for a lamb, or a kid.

12According to the number that ye shall prepare, so shall ye do to every one according to their number.

13All that are born of the country shall do these things after this manner, in offering an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.

14And if a 8stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever be 9among you in your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD; as ye do, so he shall do.

8 Namely, having his permanent habitation outside your country, but taking up for a certain time his abode among you and having embraced the true religion, as the matter evidences itself.

9 Being indeed a stranger, but having come to dwell and live amongst you.

15One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation, and also ford the stranger that sojourneth with you, 10an ordinance for ever in your generations: 11as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the LORD.

d Exod. 12:49; Num. 9:14.

10 Hebr. an institution of eternity. Compare Gen. 17 on verse 7.

11 The meaning is: the Israelites and the converted strangers shall be held in like esteem, and enjoy one manner of right in matters of religion before God.

16One law and one manner shall be for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.

17¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

18Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land whither I bring you,

19Then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall offer up an heave offering unto the LORD.

20Ye shall offer up a cake of the first of your dough for an heave offering: 12as ye do the heave offering of the threshingfloor, so shall ye heave it.

12 That is, according as your dough shall be large or small, in like manner as ye are commanded to do with the firstfruits, which afterwards is threshed out on the threshingfloor, such as wheat, rye, barley. See Lev. 2:14, 15, 16.

21Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the LORD an heave offering in your generations.

22¶And if ye have erred, and not observed all these commandments, which the LORD hath spoken unto Moses,

23Even all that the LORD hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, 13from the day that the LORD commanded Moses, and henceforward among your generations;

13 That is, ever since He gave you this law.

24Then it shall be, if ought be 14committed by 15ignorance without the knowledge of the 16congregation, that all the congregation shall offer one young bullock for a burnt offering, for a sweet savour unto the LORD, with his meat offering, and his drink offering, according to the manner, and one kid of the goats for a sin offering.

14 Namely, by the entire congregation.

15 See Lev. 4:13.

16 This some do understand of particular assemblies or congregations, which would then be in cities and villages in the land of Canaan; and that in Lev. 4:13, etc., there is understood the entire congregation, as they were together outside the land of Canaan in the camp, that they were charged then to offer only a young bullock for a sin offering, and to bring forth the same outside the camp, and burn it, Lev. 4:21, but here, beside the young bullock for a burnt offering, there is likewise prescribed a he-goat for the sin offering.

25And the priest shall make an atonement for 17all the congregation of the children of Israel, and it shall be forgiven them; for it is ignorance: and they shall bring their offering, a sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD, and their sin offering before the LORD, for their ignorance:

17 See on the previous verse.

26And it shall be forgiven all the congregation of the children of Israel, and the stranger that sojourneth among them; seeing all the people were in ignorance.

27¶Ande if any 18soul sin through ignorance, then he shall bring a she goat of the 19first year for a sin offering.

e Lev. 4:27.

18 That is, any man, or person; so in the sequel.

19 Hebr. a daughter of her year.

28And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the LORD, to make an atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him.

29Ye shall have one law for him that sinneth through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them.

30¶But the soul that doeth ought 20presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall 21be cut off from among his people.

20 That is, on purpose, with pride, and haughtiness, willfully, and in defiance without any fear and reverence to the most High and His laws. This phrase is also used in a different sense. See Exod. 14:8; Num. 33:3.

21 See Gen. 17 on verse 14.

31Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity 22shall be upon him.

22 Or, be upon him; that is, let him bear the punishment of his iniquity which he has brought upon himself by his own guilt. Compare Lev. 20 on verse 9.

32¶And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.

33And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the 23congregation.

23 To the chief rulers and judges.

34And 24they put him in ward,f because it was 25not declared what should be done to him.

24 Namely, those who had apprehended him, or some others, by order from Moses, etc.

f Lev. 24:12.

25 Understand: what kind of death he should die there was no expressed law; though in Exod. 35:2 a command was given that such as did any servile work on the Sabbath day would be put to death.

35And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.

36And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.

37¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

38Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them thatg they make them 26fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribbandh of blue:

g Deut. 22:12; Mat. 23:5.

26 Compare Deut. 22:12; Mat. 23:5. Likewise Exod. 13:16; Deut. 6:8; 11:18.

h cord, twisted thread

39And 27it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye seek not 28after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:

27 Namely, the ribband.

28 That is, ye shall not seek to follow the thoughts of your hearts and the desirableness of your eyes to go a whoring after the idols of the heathen; as ye are much inclined to do by your carnal sensuality which proved too apparent in them.

40That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God.

41I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, 29to be your God: I am the LORD your God.

29 See Gen. 17 on verse 7.
