Matthew 8

2Christ cleanseth the leper; 5healeth the centurion's servant, 14Peter's mother in law, 16and many other diseased; 18showeth how he is to be followed; 23stilleth the tempest on the sea; 28driveth the devils out of two men possessed, and suffereth them to go into the swine.

1WHEN he was come down from the 1mountain, great multitudes followed him.

1 Namely, on which He had climbed to preach, Mat. 5:1.

2And,a behold, there came a 2leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

a Mark 1:40; Luke 5:12.

2 Leprosy, in those lands with hot climates, was a cruel and dirty sickness or itchiness, proceeding from infected blood in people, and was a plague, infecting not only people, but also clothing and houses. See Leviticus 13; 14.

3And Jesus put forth his hand, and 3touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

3 Namely, to heal him. Otherwise they were, according to the law, unclean, who touched the lepers, Lev. 13:46.

4And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell 4no man; but gob thy way, 5shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Mosesc6commanded, for a 7testimony unto them.

4 See the reasons hereof in Mat. 12:16.

b Luke 5:14.

5 Namely, to be viewed or inspected if he was truly healed. See Lev. 14:2. From which the auricular or confession cannot be proven, since Christ does not send him to be healed, but to be declared that he was cleansed.

c Lev. 13:2; 14:2.

6 Or, has instituted. See Lev. 14:4, etc.

7 Or, conviction, namely, that they did amiss in rejecting Christ to Whose miracles they themselves had given witness.

5¶And whend Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

d Luke 7:1.

6And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speake the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

e Psalm 107:20.

9For I am a man 8under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

8 That is, if I, who am placed under the authority of others, have such an authority over others who are under me and who are also the same as myself, how much more must all things be under Thy command, Who is Lord over all things.

10When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found 9so great faith, no, not in Israel.

9 Namely, as with this pagan commander in chief.

11Andf I say unto you, That many shall come 10from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

f Luke 13:29.

10 Gr. a rising and setting, namely of the sun, that is, from all quarters of the world; wherewith is prophesied the calling, conversion and salvation of the Gentiles, John 11:52.

12Butg the 11children of the kingdom shall be cast out into 12outer darkness: thereh shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

g Mat. 21:43.

11 That is, those Jews, with whom God truly had made an external covenant, but who have made themselves unworthy of it by their unbelief. See Acts 13:46.

12 That is, those who are outside the Kingdom of heaven, namely, in hell.

h Mat. 13:42; 22:13; 24:51; Luke 13:28.

13And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

14¶Andi when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his 13wife’s mother 14laid, and sick of a fever.

i Mark 1:29; Luke 4:38.

13 From this appears that the apostle Peter has been married, and having become an apostle, he has not deserted his housewife. See also 1 Cor. 9:5.

14 Gr. cast, upon the bed.

15And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto 15them.

15 Other, him.

16¶When the 16even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits 17with his word, and healed 18all that were sick:

16 Or, early evening.

17 That is, only by His command.

18 Namely, those who came or were brought unto Him. See Mat. 4:24.

17That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by 19Esaias the prophet, saying, Himselfj took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

19 This is mainly understood in Isa. 53:4 of our spiritual infirmities and sicknesses, that is, of our sins, of which Christ has laden upon Himself to satisfy for that purpose and therewith to redeem us of the same; which He has also given to understand with the recovery of bodily diseases.

j Isa. 53:4; 1 Peter 2:24.

18¶Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart 20unto the other side.

20 Namely, of the Sea of Galilee, towards the country of the Gergesenes, over against Capernaum. See the verses 5 and 28.

19Andk a certain scribe came, and said unto him, 21Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.

k Luke 9:57.

21 Or, Teacher.

20And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the 22air have 23nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

22 Gr. of the heaven, that is, of the air, as Mat. 6:26.

23 Or, places of rest, where they go to rest as under a tent, as the Greek word properly implies.

21And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.

22But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and letl24the dead bury their dead.

l 1 Tim. 5:6.

24 Those, who live in their sins, are called spiritually dead, 1 Tim. 5:6; Rev. 3:1.

23¶Andm when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.

m Mark 4:35; Luke 8:22.

24And, behold, there 25arose a great 26tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

25 Gr. was.

26 Or, commotion, disturbance.

25And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.

26And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Thenn he arose, and 27rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great 28calm.

n Job 26:12; Psalm 107:29; Isa. 51:10.

27 Commanding them to be still. See Mark 4:39.

28 Or, quietness.

27But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

28¶Ando when he was come to the other side into the country 29of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the 30tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.

o Mark 5:1; Luke 8:26.

29 Mark 5:1; Luke 8:26, 37 say: of the Gadarenes. For, those cities Gadara and Gergessa were close together at the Sea of Galilee over against Capernaum.

30 There were many graves in caves, holes or vaults outside the cities, as is to be seen in Mat. 27:60.

29And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us 31before the time?

31 Namely, appointed by God unto their torment, which shall be in the last judgment. See 2 Peter 2:4; Jude verse 6.

30And there was a good way off from them an herd of many 32swine feeding.

32 These places were much inhabited by Greeks or Gentiles, for whose use these swine were raised. For, the Jews were forbidden to eat the flesh of swine. See Leviticus 11.

31So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.

32And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.

33And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.

34And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besoughtphim that he would depart out of their coasts.

p Acts 16:39.
