THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
*MARK

Mark 5

1Christ casteth out the legion of devils, and suffereth them to enter into the herd of swine: 21he is entreated by Jairus to go and heal his daughter: 25by the way he healeth a woman of an inveterate issue of blood: 35he raiseth Jairus' daughter to life.

1AND theya came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the 1Gadarenes.

a Mat. 8:28; Luke 8:26.

1 Matthew says: of the Gergesenes. See thereof the annotation at Mat. 8 on verse 28.

2And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man 2with an unclean spirit,

2 Gr. in an unclean spirit. Mat. 8:28 says that there were two who were possessed, but Mark makes mention but of one, either because this person was the most wretched, or had most discourse and speech with Christ.

3Who had his dwelling 3among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

3 See hereof Mat. 8:28.

4Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

5And always, night and day, he was 4in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

4 That is, in the caves, which were in the mountains.

6But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him,

7And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? 5I adjure thee by God, that thou 6torment me not.

5 That is, I warn Thee in the Name of God. For, to adjure is by invocation or making mention of God’s Name to impose something upon another, or to desire something from him. See Acts 19:13 and 1 Thes. 5:27.

6 That is, cast me not into the abyss, there to be tormented, Luke 8:31.

8For 7he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit.

7 Namely, Jesus.

9And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is 8Legion:b for we are many.

8 Legion was a regiment of soldiers, whereof see Mat. 26:53.

b Roman legion comprising 3,000 to 6,000 soldiers

10And 9he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country.

9 Namely, one of these devils, who, as the head of the rest, was the speaker.

11Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.

12And all the devils besought him, saying, 10Send us into the swine, that we may 11enter into them.

10 This they desire of Christ, to make Him thereby hateful to the inhabitants there.

11 Or, may pass into.

13And forthwith Jesus 12gave them leave. And the unclean spirits 13went out, and 14entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were 15choked in the 16sea.

12 See the annotation at Mat. 8 on verse 30.

13 Gr. gone out.

14 Gr. went in.

15 Or, stifled.

16 Namely, in the lake that was near Gadara, which is taken for the Sea of Galilee itself, to which Gadara was situated. See the annotations at Mat. 8 on verse 28.

14And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

15And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion,c sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

c Roman legion comprising 3,000 to 6,000 soldiers

16And they that saw it told them 17how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine.

17 Or, what, that is, how the healing occurred to him.

17Andd they began to pray him 18to depart out of their coasts.

dActs 16:39.

18 Namely, for fear they would suffer more loss, thereby showing that they esteemed more their temporal goods than Christ and His Gospel.

18Ande19when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.

e Luke 8:38.

19 Namely, to pass over again towards Galilee.

19Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.

20And he departed, and began to publish in 20Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

20 Of this land, see the annotation at Mat. 4 on verse 25.

21Andf when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.

f Luke 8:40.

22And,g behold, there cometh one of the 21rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,

g Mat. 9:18; Luke 8:41.

21 These were as ecclesiastical-counselors, set over the synagogues, to keep and govern the same in good order. See Acts 13:15.

23And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter 22lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be 23healed; and she shall 24live.

22 In Mat. 9:18 we find that he said: My daughter is dead, respecting to that word which afterwards was brought to him, verse 35.

23 Namely, alive.

24 That is, remain alive.

24And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

25Andh a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,

h Lev. 15:25; Mat. 9:20; Luke 8:43.

26And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

27When she had heard of Jesus, came in the pressi behind, and touched his garment.

i crowd*

28For she said, If I may 25touch but his clothes, I shall be 26whole.

25 See hereof the annotations at Mat. 9 on verse 21; 14 on verse 36.

26 Gr. saved.

29And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she 27felt in her body that she was healed of that 28plague.

27 Or, acknowledged.

28 Gr. scourge. See Mark 3:10.

30And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself thatj29virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

j Luke 6:19.

29 That is, the work which by His Divine nature was wrought upon this woman. Or, that this power was gone forth out of Him.

31And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

32And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

33But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all 30the truth.

30 Namely, of what she had thought and done.

34Andk he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

k Mat. 9:22; Mark 10:52.

35Whilel he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master 31any further?

l Luke 8:49.

31 Namely, to go further.

36As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

37And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

3832And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the 33tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

32 See further of this history the annotation at Mat. 9 on verse 23.

33 Or, the noise, the turmoil.

39And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? them damseln is not dead, but sleepeth.

m John 11:11.

n young woman, girl, servant*

40And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had 34put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them 35that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

34 Gr. cast them out.

35 Namely, Peter, John and James, whom He had taken (along) with Him, verse 37.

41And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, 36Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

36 The evangelist retains the Syriac words which Christ used, to make us in a manner hear Christ Himself speak in His own tongue.

42And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

43And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
