THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
*MARK

Mark 16

1Christ's resurrection is declared by angels to the two Marys and Salome. 9Christ himself appeareth to Mary Magdalene; 12to two of his disciples going into the country; 14and to the eleven; whom he commissioneth to preach the gospel to all the world: 19his ascension into heaven; the gospel is preached every where, the Lord confirming the word with signs.

1AND whena the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, 1had bought sweet spices, that they might come and 2anoint him.

a Mat. 28:1; Luke 24:1; John 20:1.

1 Or, have, but this word had suits here better, because the spices were bought already the evening before the sabbath, as Luke declares in Luke 23:56.

2 That is, embalmed.

2And very early in the morning the first day 3of the week, they came unto the sepulchre 4at the rising of the sun.

3 Gr. of the sabbaths, which was the third day after He had been buried, which day was therefore called the Lord’s day, because He arose on that day. See Rev. 1:10.

4 They had made themselves ready to go by daybreak, when it was dark yet, John 20:1, but they came not to the grave till sunrise.

3And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

4And when they looked, they saw that the stone was 5rolled away: for it was very great.

5 Namely, by the angel, Mat. 28:2.

5Andb entering into the sepulchre, they saw 6a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a 7long white garment; and they were affrighted.c

b Mat. 28:2; John 20:12.

6 That is, an angel in the shape of a young man.

7 Gr. stole. See thereof Mark 12:38.

c frightened*

6And he saith unto them, Bed not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

d Mat. 28:5; Luke 24:5.

7But go your way, tell his disciples 8and Peter that he goeth beforee you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, 9asf he said unto you.

8 That is, and especially to Peter, because he, by reason of his denial and sorrow, stood in especial need of comfort.

e Acts 1:3; 13:31; 1 Cor. 15:5.

9 Namely, before His sufferings, Mark 14:28.

f Mat. 26:32; 28:10; Mark 14:28.

8Andg they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither 10said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

g Mat. 28:8; Luke 24:9; John 20:18.

10 Namely, of those who met them, until they came to the disciples, to whom they told it, verse 10 and Luke 24:9.

9¶Now when Jesus was risen early the first day 11of the week, he 12appeared firsth to Mary Magdalene, outi of whom he had cast seven devils.

11 Gr. of the sabbath; which is also sometimes taken for the entire week. See Luke 18:12.

12 Of this first appearance, see in more detail in John 20:14.

h John 20:14, 16.

i Luke 8:2.

10And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

11And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

12¶Afterj that he appeared 13in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went 14into the country.

j Luke 24:13.

13 Which He truly had not, but which He seemed to them to have, forasmuch as their eyes were held, that they knew Him not, Luke 24:16.

14 Namely, to Emmaus, Luke 24:13. See there also this history written in more detail.

13And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

14¶Afterwardk he appeared unto the eleven 15as they sat at meat, and upbraidedl them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

k Luke 24:36; John 20:19; 1 Cor. 15:5.

15 Or, as they sat together.

l reproached

15And he said unto them, Gom ye 16into all the world, and preach the gospel 17to every creature.

m Mat. 28:19; John 15:16.

16 Or, in the whole world.

17 Gr. every creature, or thing created, that is, all nations Mat. 28:19, namely, not only to the Jews, but also to those of Greece or the Gentiles, that is, to all sorts of people. See Col. 1:23.

16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; butn he that believeth not shall be damned.

n John 3:18; 12:48.

17And 18these signs shall follow them that believe; Ino my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak withp19new tongues;

18 Namely, as much as shall be needful for the spreading and confirmation of the doctrine of the Gospel. For, the gift to work miracles is not given to all, 1 Cor. 12:28. Neither is it needful when the Gospel is sufficiently established.

o Luke 10:17; Acts 5:16; 8:7; 16:18; 19:12.

p Acts 2:4; 10:46; 19:6.

19 That is, with foreign tongues, which they had not learned, Acts 2:4.

18Theyq shall take up 20serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands onr the sick, and 21they shall recover.

q Luke 10:19; Acts 28:5.

20 Namely, without hurt, as Paul did, Acts 28:5.

r Acts 28:8.

21 Gr. they shall have well, that is, it shall be well with them.

19¶So then 22after the Lord had spoken unto them, he wass received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

22 Namely, during the space of forty days, concerning the Kingdom of God, Acts 1:3.

s Luke 24:50; Acts 1:9.

20And theyt went forth, and preached 23every where, theu Lord 24working with them, and 25confirming 26the word with signs following. Amen.

t Acts 1:2; 1 Tim. 3:16.

23 That is, all the world over, Acts 10:28, 42.

u Acts 14:3; Heb. 2:4.

24 Namely, by the working of His Spirit, making the preaching of His Word powerful in the hearts of people unto their conversion. See Acts 14:3 and 16:14; 1 Cor. 3:7.

25 Or, made powerful.

26 Namely, of the preaching of the Gospel.
