THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
*MARK

Mark 15

1Jesus is brought bound and accused before Pilate: his silence before the governor. 6Pilate, prevailed upon by the clamours of the people, releaseth Barabbas, and giveth up Jesus to be crucified. 16Christ is mocked of the soldiers, crowned with thorns, and led to the place of crucifixion: 24he is crucified between two thieves, 29reviled, 33and calling upon God expireth. 38The veil of the temple rent. 39The centurion's confession. 42Joseph of Arimathaea beggeth the body, and burieth it.

1AND straightwaya in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and 1delivered him tob Pilate.

a Psalm 2:2; Mat. 27:1; Luke 22:66; 23:1; John 18:28.

1 See Mat. 27:2 the cause wherefore they delivered Him up to Pilate.

b Acts 3:13.

2Andc Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, 2Thou sayest it.

c Mat. 27:11; Luke 23:3; John 18:33.

2 Of this manner of speaking, see the annotation at Mat. 26 on verse 25.

3And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.

4Andd Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.

d Mat. 27:13; John 19:10.

5But Jesus yet answered 3nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.

3 Gr. no more anything. The reason of this silence, see Mat. 27 on verse 14.

6Nowe4at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.

e Mat. 27:15; Luke 23:17; John 18:39.

4 Or, on every feast, namely, of the passover. See John 18:39.

7Andf there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.

f Mat. 27:16; Luke 23:19; John 18:40.

8And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do 5as he had ever done unto them.

5 Namely, that he would release one prisoner unto them.

9But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

10For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.

11Butg the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.

g Mat. 27:20; Luke 23:18; John 18:40; Acts 3:14.

12And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?

13And they cried out again, Crucify him.

14Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.

15¶And so Pilate,h willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and 6delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

h Mat. 27:26; John 19:1.

6 Namely, to the captain and the soldiers.

16Andi the soldiers led him away into the hall, called 7Prætorium; and they call together the whole band.

i Mat. 27:27; John 19:2.

7 Or, judgment house. Gr. praitorion, whereby is expressed the Latin word Prætorium, which signifies the place where the Roman governors dwelt and kept their tribunal or judgment seat.

17And they 8clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

8 Or, put on Him purple, that is, with a purple cloak. See hereof in more detail the annotation at Mat. 27 on verse 28.

18And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

19And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees 9worshipped him.

9 Honoring Him by way of mockery, as the Gentiles in earnest use to honor their kings.

20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

21Andj they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of 10Alexander and Rufus, to bear 11his cross.

j Mat. 27:32; Luke 23:26.

10 The names of these are here expressed, because afterwards they were famous persons in the church of God, of whom there seems likewise mention made in Rom. 16:13.

11 Namely, of Christ. See the cause in the annotation at Mat. 27 on verse 32.

22Andk they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, 12The place of a skull.

k Mat. 27:33; Luke 23:33; John 19:17.

12 See Mat. 27:33.

23And they gave him to drink 13wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

13 Hereof see Mat. 27:34.

24Andl when they had crucified him, they partedm his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.

l Mat. 27:35; Luke 23:34; John 19:23.

m Psalm 22:18.

25And it was 14the third hour, and they crucified him.

14 These hours must be reckoned after the manner of the Jews, from the sun rising to sun setting. See Mat. 20:3; John 11:9. And seeing the passover then came, about the time that the days and nights were of equal length, therefore the third hour agrees with our ninth, the sixth with our twelfth, and the ninth hour with our third in the afternoon. John says, John 19:14, that it was about the sixth hour when he brought Him forth. How this agrees, see the annotation at John 19 on verse 14.

26Andn the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

n Mat. 27:37; Luke 23:38; John 19:19.

27And with him they crucify two 15thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.

15 Or, highway robbers.

28Ando the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

o Isa. 53:12; Luke 22:37.

29Andp they that passed by railedq on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thour that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

p Psalm 22:7; 69:20; 109:25; Mat. 27:39; Luke 23:35.

q insulted, blasphemed*

r John 2:19.

30Save thyself, and come down from the cross.

31Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; 16himself he cannot save.

16 Other, can He not save Himself?

32Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And 17they that were crucified with him reviled him.

17 Namely, one of them, see Mat. 27:44; Luke 23:29.

33Ands when the sixth hour was come, there was 18darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.

s Mat. 27:45; Luke 23:44.

18 Of this darkness see Mat. 27 on verse 45, as also of all that follows.

34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi,t Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

t Psalm 22:1; Mat. 27:46.

35And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.

36Andu one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and 19put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

u Psalm 69:21; John 19:29.

19 Or, stuck it on.

37And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

38Andv20the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

v 2 Chron. 3:14; Mat. 27:51; Luke 23:45.

20 See hereof Mat. 27 on verse 51.

39¶Andw when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he 21so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

w Mat. 27:54; Luke 23:47.

21 Namely, with such a strong voice, Heb. 5:7, and that thereupon He did forthwith expire. And seeing moreover the miracles which happened thereupon, as is related, Mat. 27:54.

40Therex were also women looking on afary off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and 22Mary the mother of James 23the less and of Joses, and 24Salome;

x Mat. 27:55; Luke 23:49.

y Psalm 38:11.

22 The wife of Alphæus. See Mat. 10:3 and 27:56.

23 That is, the younger, who was so surnamed to distinguish him either from another James, who was the son of Zebedee, or, from his uncle the brother of Alphæus, as some think.

24 This was the wife of Zebedee, as appears by this place compared with Mat. 27:56.

41(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;z) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

z Luke 8:2, 3.

42¶Andaa now when the 25even was come, because it was 26the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

aa Mat. 27:57; Luke 23:50; John 19:38.

25 Namely, on the day before the sabbath.

26 Namely, of the passover, which the Jews, at that time, had put off unto the sabbath. The reason hereof are related in the annotation at Mat. 26 on verse 20.

43Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for 27the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

27 Namely, which would be set up by the Messiah, Luke 2:25, 38.

44And Pilate marvelled 28if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

28 Gr. whether, or, that.

45And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

46And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laidab him in a sepulchre which was hewn 29out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

ab Mat. 12:40; 26:12; 27:60; Luke 23:53.

29 That is, it was hewn out in a rock, as it is stated in Mat. 27:60.

47And 30Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

30 See the previous fortieth verse.
