THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO
*MARK

Mark 10

1Christ teacheth in Judaea: 2answereth the Pharisees' question concerning divorce: 13blesseth the children that were brought unto him: 23sheweth how hard it is for the rich to enter into the kingdom of God: 28promiseth rewards to all who have forsaken ought for his gospel's sake: 32foretelleth his own death and resurrection: 35putteth aside the ambitious suit of the sons of Zebedee; and checketh the indignation of the other disciples thereat: 46giveth sight to blind Bartimaeus.

1ANDa he arose 1from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judæa by 2the farther side of Jordan: and the 3people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.

a Mat. 19:1.

1 Namely, from Capernaum, out of the house, where before He had made an exhortation to His disciples.

2 Namely, in respect of the wilderness. Or, by the Jordan. See Mat. 19:1, etc.

3 Namely, who had followed Him from Galilee, Mat. 19:2.

2¶And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.

3And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?

4And they said, Mosesb suffered to write a 4bill of divorcement, and to put her away.

b Deut. 24:1; Jer. 3:1; Mat. 5:31.

4 Of the bill of divorcement and this complete answer of Christ, see Mat. 19:3, etc.

5And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.

6Butc from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

c Gen. 1:27; Mat. 19:4.

7Ford this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and 5cleave to his wife;

d Gen. 2:24; 1 Cor. 6:16; Eph. 5:31.

5 Or, adhere. See Mat. 19:5.

8And they twain shall be 6one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

6 That is, as one body, or one human being.

9Whate therefore God hath 7joined together, let not man 8put asunder.

e 1 Cor. 7:10.

7 Gr. has put together as into one yoke.

8 Namely, contrary to, or outside of God’s ordinance. Or, other than for fornication; as is expressed in Mat. 5:32; 19:9.

10And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.

11Andf he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery 9against her.

f Mat. 5:32; 19:9; Luke 16:18; 1 Cor. 7:10.

9 Namely, whom he forsakes, because he does not keep fidelity, which he has promised her, Mal. 2:14.

12And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

13¶Andg they 10brought young children to him, that he should 11touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.

g Mat. 19:13; Luke 18:15.

10 Or, carried.

11 That is, blessing them by laying on of His hands, Mat. 19:13, as He did, verse 16.

14But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: forh of such is the kingdom of God.

h Mat. 18:3; 19:14; 1 Cor. 14:20; 1 Peter 2:2.

15Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God 12as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

12 Namely, in simplicity, uprightness and humility.

16Andi he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

i Mat. 19:15; Mark 9:36.

17¶Andj when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

j Mat. 19:16; Luke 18:18.

18And Jesus said unto him, Why 13callest thou me good? there is 14none good but one, that is, God.

13 Gr. sayest thou.

14 See hereof the annotation at Mat. 19 on verse 17.

19Thou knowest the commandments, Dok not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, 15Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

k Exod. 20:13; 21:12; Deut. 5:17; Rom. 13:9.

15 Namely, either by deceit or otherwise, which Christ has established in Mat. 19:19: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; in order that this is as a short summary of all the foregoing commandments.

20And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

21Then Jesus beholding him 16loved him, and said unto him, Onel thing thou 17lackest: go thy way, 18sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

16 That is, showed him signs of an inclination towards him, as this word sometimes also signifies. For, Christ loves those also somewhat, who outwardly carry themselves according to God’s commandments. See further the annotations at Mat. 19 on verse 17, etc.

l Mat. 6:19; Luke 12:33; 16:9; 1 Tim. 6:17.

17 Namely, that thou lovest not God and His Word above all, which notwithstanding is the most important thing in the law.

18 This was an extraordinary command, which Christ gives this young man to try him, and to make appear his imperfection.

22And he was 19sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great 20possessions.

19 Or, sullen, perplexed.

20 Or, belongings.

23¶And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, Howm hardlyn shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

m Prov. 11:28; Mat. 19:23; Luke 18:24.

n with difficulty*

24And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!

25It is easier for 21a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

21 See hereof the annotations at Mat. 19 on verse 24.

26And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?

27And Jesus looking upon them saith, 22With men it is impossible, but not with God: foro with God all things are possible.

22 See hereof likewise, Mat. 19 on verse 26.

o Job 42:2; Jer. 32:17; Zech. 8:6; Luke 1:37.

28¶Thenp Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

p Mat. 4:20; 19:27; Luke 5:11; 18:28.

29And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,

30But he shall receive an 23hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, 24with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

23 That is, manifold; or, what is an hundred fold and much more worthier than that he leaves. For, the least blessing of God with a quiet conscience is more than all the goods of the world, 1 Tim. 6:6.

24 That is, in the midst of all tribulations.

31Butq many that are 25first shall be last; and the last first.

q Mat. 19:30; 20:16; Luke 13:30.

25 That is, which in outward zeal and worship seem to be the first.

32¶Andr they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus 26went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were 27afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

r Mat. 16:21; 17:22; 20:18; Mark 8:31; 9:31; Luke 9:22; 18:31; 24:7.

26 Namely, to show His willingness to suffer.

27 Because Christ had told them before, as afterwards He relates this again, what He was to suffer at Jerusalem, John 11:8, and they knew that the Jews had concluded in their council to put Him to death, John 11:53, 57.

33Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

34And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

35¶Ands James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, 28saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.

s Mat. 20:20.

28 Namely, by their mother, as appears at Mat. 20:20.

36And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

37They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may 29sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

29 See hereof, Mat. 20 on verse 21.

38But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the 30cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism thatt I am baptized with?

30 See the exposition hereof at Mat. 20 on verse 22.

t Mat. 20:22; Luke 12:50.

39And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

40But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand 31is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whomu it is prepared.

31 Gr. is not mine. Or, is not Mine to give; but for whom it is prepared. See Mat. 20:23.

u Mat. 25:34.

41Andv when the ten heard it, they began to be 32much displeased with James and John.

v Mat. 20:24.

32 Because they thought that this request was prejudicial to them.

42But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, 33Ye know thatw they 34which are accounted to rule over 35the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

33 See hereof likewise, Mat. 20:25.

w Mat. 20:25; Luke 22:25.

34 Or, who would imagine.

35 Other, of the nations.

43Butx so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

x 1 Peter 5:3.

44And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

45For even the Son of man came not toy be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give hisz36life 37a ransom for many.

y John 13:14; Philip. 2:7.

z Eph. 1:7; Col. 1:14; 1 Tim. 2:6; Titus 2:14.

36 Or, soul.

37 Or, release money, which is given for the release of captives.

46¶Andaa they came to 38Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind 39Bartimæus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.

aa Mat. 20:29; Luke 18:35.

38 This city was situated near Gilgal, about Jordan, of which see Joshua 4:19.

39 The evangelist Matthew speaks of two blind men; but Mark makes mention only of him who was most known and of the two cried the most.

47And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

48And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

49And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.

50And he, casting away 40his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

40 Or, his cloak, that is, his upper garment.

51And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, 41Lord, that I might receive my sight.

41 Gr. Rabboni, this signifies the same as the word rabbi, which is interpreted master, John 20:16.

52And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thyab faith 42hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

ab Mat. 9:22; Mark 5:34.

42 That is, made thee whole or seeing. Not that this was done by the power of faith, but because the same resting upon Christ and His power was a means thereof.
