THE GOSPEL ACCORDING to
*LUKE

Luke 8

1Christ preacheth through the cities, attended by his disciples, and ministered unto by devout women of their substance. 4The parable of the sower. 9Why Christ taught in parables. 11The parable expounded. 16Light is given to be improved and communicated. 19Christ sheweth whom he regardeth as his nearest relations: 22stilleth a tempest on the sea with his word: 26casteth out the legion of devils, and suffereth them to enter into the herd of swine: is entreated by the Gadarenes to depart, and sendeth back him that was healed to declare God's goodness: 41is besought by Jairus to go and heal his daughter: 43by the way he healeth a woman of an inveterate issue of blood: 49he raiseth Jairus' daughter to life.

1AND it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and 1shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and 2the twelve were with him,

1 Gr. evangelizing the Kingdom of God.

2 Namely, apostles.

2Anda certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, 3Mary called Magdalene, outb of whom went seven devils,

a Mat. 27:55, 56.

3 Of this Mary see Mark 16:9.

b Mark 16:9.

3And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s 4steward, and Susanna, and many others, which 5ministered unto him of their substance.

4 Or, manager. Gr. epitropou. See Mat. 20:8.

5 That is, gave assistance for the maintenance of Him and His disciples, in thankfulness for the benefits received from Christ, 1 Cor. 9:11; Gal. 6:6.

4¶Andc when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by 6a parable:

c Mat. 13:3; Mark 4:2.

6 Or, by similitude.

57A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.

7 Of this parable of the sower see Mat. 13 on verse 3, etc.

6And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.

7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.

8And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an 8hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

8 That is, very abundantly, forasmuch as the greatest fruitfulness seldom exceeds that, Gen. 26:12.

9Andd his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable 9be?

d Mat. 13:10; Mark 4:10.

9 That is, mean, or signify, as also verse 11 and so forward.

10And he said, Unto 10you it is givene to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: butf to others in parables; thatg seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand.

10 See hereof Mark 4:11.

e 2 Cor. 3:5.

f Mat. 11:25; 2 Cor. 3:14.

g Isa. 6:9; Ezek. 12:2; Mat. 13:14; Mark 4:12; John 12:40; Acts 28:26; Rom. 11:8.

11Nowh the parable is this: The seed 11is the word of God.

h Mat. 13:18; Mark 4:13.

11 That is, signifies.

12Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

13Theyi on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

i Mat. 13:20; Mark 4:16.

14And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are chokedj with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

j Mat. 19:23; Mark 10:23; Luke 18:24; 1 Tim. 6:9.

15But that on the good ground are they, which in an 12honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit 13with patience.

12 That is, opened, awakened and made suitable by the Spirit of God to embrace the Word and to obey it, Jer. 31:33; Ezek. 36:26, 27; Acts 16:14.

13 Or, in perseverance, whereby, notwithstanding all temptations and tribulations for the Word’s sake, they persevere patiently. See Mat. 24:13; Heb. 10:36.

16¶Nok man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a 14bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.

k Mat. 5:15; Mark 4:21; Luke 11:33.

14 Or, cupboard-bed.

17Forl15nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.

l Job 12:22; Mat. 10:26; Mark 4:22; Luke 12:2.

15 Namely, of those things which I have revealed unto you. See Mat. 10:27; Mark 4:22.

18Take heed therefore 16how ye hear: form whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he 17seemeth to have.

16 That is, with what inclination of heart you come to the hearing of the Word, and having heard, how you may make a right use of the same.

m Mat. 13:12; 25:29; Mark 4:25; Luke 19:26.

17 Or, thinketh to have. See the annotation at Mat. 13 on verse 12.

19¶Thenn came to him his mother and his 18brethren, and could not come at him for the press.o

n Mat. 12:46; 13:55; Mark 3:31.

18 That is, kinsmen or cousins. See Mat. 12:46.

o crowd*

20And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring 19to see thee.

19 That is, to speak with.

21And he answered and said unto them, Myp mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

p John 15:14; 2 Cor. 5:16.

22¶Nowq20it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.

q Mat. 8:23; Mark 4:35, 36.

20 Of this whole story, see Mat. 8:23.

23But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there 21came down 22a storm of wind on the lake; and 23they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy.

21 Gr. descended.

22 Or, whirling.

23 That is, the ship in which they were.

24And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and 24they ceased, and there was a calm.

24 Namely, the winds and the waves.

25And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, Whatr manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.

r Job 26:12; Psalm 107:25.

26¶Ands they arrived at the country of the 25Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.

s Mat. 8:28; Mark 5:1.

25 Matthew says Gergesenes, whereof see Mat. 8 on verse 28.

27And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had 26devils long time, and waret no clothes, neither 27abode in any house, but in the tombs.

26 Gr. had had devils.

t wore*

27 Or, dwelt, Mark 5:3.

28When he saw Jesus, he 28cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, 29What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, 30torment me not.

28 Namely, the evil spirit out of the man, whom he had possessed.

29 Gr. what is me and Thee.

30 Namely, before the time of the last judgment. See Mat. 8:29.

29(For he had commanded the unclean spirit 31to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had 32caught him: and he was kept 33bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil 34into the wilderness.)

31 Gr. go forth.

32 Gr. laid hold on him, or, drawn together, as in falling sicknesses the members oftentimes are drawn together.

33 Namely, that he would do himself or others no harm.

34 That is, into desolate and solitary places; into wildernesses.

30And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, 35Legion: because many devils were entered into him.

35 What a legion is, see Mat. 26 on verse 53.

31And 36they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the 37deep.

36 Or, he besought, as Mark 5:10.

37 That is, a depth without bottom, Gen. 17:11. As such hell is called or the place where the unclean spirits and ungodly men shall be tormented forever. See Rev. 9:1, 2.

32And there was there an herd of many 38swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.

38 See concerning them, Mat. 8 on verse 30.

33Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.

34When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.

35Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, 39sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

39 Namely, as a disciple of Christ hearing His Word, as Luke 10:39.

36They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed.

37¶Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about 40besought him tou depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again.

40 Namely, for fear of receiving anymore such losses, seeing they loved their gain more than Christ and His Word.

u Acts 16:39.

38Nowv the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be 41with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,

v Mark 5:18.

41 That is, continually abide with Him as one of His disciples.

39Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole 42city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

42 Namely, Gadara or Gergessa, which were cities of Decapolis, in which Mark says that he published it, Mark 5:20.

40And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.

41¶And,w behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a 43ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:

w Mat. 9:18; Mark 5:22.

43 Of this ruler of the synagogue see Mark 5 on verse 22.

42For he had one 44only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she 45lay a dying. But as he went the people 46thronged him.

44 Gr. only begotten.

45 Gr. and this one died.

46 Gr. to press around Him.

43¶Andx a woman having an issuey of blood twelve years, which had spent 47all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,

x Mat. 9:20; Mark 5:25.

y Lev. 15:25.

47 Or, all her livelihood, that is, all her means whereby to live.

44Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood 48stanched.

48 Gr. stood, that is, ceased.

45And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?

46And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I 49perceive that 50virtue is gone out of me.

49 That is, I have been aware, or, have known.

50 See hereof Mark 5 on verse 30.

47And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately.

48And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.

49¶Whilez he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master.

z Mark 5:35.

50But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be 51made whole.

51 Or, be delivered, namely from death.

51And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden.

52And all wept, and 52bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is 53not dead, butaa54sleepeth.

52 Gr. smote themselves on the breast for her sake. See Mat. 11:17.

53 Namely, to remain dead as other people when they die.

aa John 11:11.

54 That is, her death is like a sleep, from which she shall be raised up, John 11:11, 13.

53And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.

54And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.

55And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.

56And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell 55no man what was done.

55 Why Christ would not have His miracles spread abroad for a time, see Mat. 12:16, 17.
