THE GOSPEL ACCORDING to
*LUKE

Luke 4

1Christ fasteth forty days, and is tempted of the devil. 14He beginneth to preach: 16the people of Nazareth wonder at his gracious words, but being offended go about to kill him: he escapeth by miracle. 33He casteth out a devil: 38healeth Simon's mother in law, 40and many other diseased persons: 41the devils acknowledging him are silenced: 42he preacheth through the cities of Galilee.

1AND Jesusa being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led 1by the Spirit into the wilderness,

a Mat. 4:1; Mark 1:12.

1 Gr. in the Spirit, namely, of Which He had just mentioned earlier in the text.

2Being 2forty days tempted of the devil. Andb in those days he 3did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

2 But especially, near the end, when Satan tempted Him most vehemently, as appears out of Mat. 4:2.

b Exod. 34:28; 1 Kings 19:8.

3 Of this fast of Christ, together with these temptations, see the explanations on Matthew 4.

3And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

4And Jesus answered him, saying, Itc is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

c Deut. 8:3; Mat. 4:4.

54And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a 5moment of time.

4 Matthew relates this for the third temptation, Mat. 4:8, from which it appears that the evangelists do not so much bind themselves to the method, as to the matter itself.

5 Gr. point of time.

6And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: 6for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

6 Although the devil ascribes this to himself contrary to the truth, as being a liar, John 8:44, notwithstanding through God’s permission and righteous judgment against the sins of men, he often misuses the honor and the riches of the world to deceive mankind, carrying himself as a prince and god of this world, John 12:31; 2 Cor. 4:4; Eph. 6:12.

7If thou therefore wilt 7worship me, all shall be thine.

7 Or, fall down before Me, namely, to worship me.

8And Jesus answered and said unto him, 8Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thoud shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

8 Gr. Get away behind Me.

d Deut. 6:13; 10:20; 1 Sam. 7:3.

9And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

10For it is written, Hee shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

e Psalm 91:11.

11And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thouf shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

f Deut. 6:16.

13And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him 9for a season.

9 For, it appears that, towards the time of His suffering, he set violently upon Him again, John 14:30.

14¶Andg Jesus returned 10in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

g Mat. 4:12; Mark 1:14; John 4:43; Acts 10:37.

10 Or, by the power.

15And he taught in their synagogues, being 11glorified of all.

11 Or, praised.

16¶Andh he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the 12sabbath day, andi stood up for to read.

h Mat. 13:54; Mark 6:1; John 4:43.

12 Gr. of the sabbaths.

i Neh. 8:5, 6.

17And there was 13delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had 14opened the book, he found 15the place where it was written,

13 That is, handed or reached unto Him. See Acts 13:15.

14 Gr. had unfolded or unrolled, as often in old times books were written on parchment or paper rolls, Psalm 40:7; Heb. 10:7; Rev. 6:14.

15 Here Christ seems to have joined two places out of Isaiah together; for, some of these words are in Isa. 61:1 and some in Isa. 42:7.

18Thej Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel tok the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance tol the captives, and 16recovering of sight to the blind, to set 17at liberty them that are 18bruised,

j Isa. 61:1.

k Mat. 11:5.

l Isa. 42:7; 61:1, 2.

16 Gr. the obtaining of sight.

17 Gr. in release.

18 Or, wounded.

19To preach 19the acceptable year of the Lord.

19 Thus the time of the coming of the Messiah and of the preaching of the Gospel is called, because the acceptable year of Jubilee was a type thereof, in which all goods, that were alienated, came to their first owner, and all servants of the Israelites were set at liberty, Lev. 25:8, etc.

20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to 20the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

20 Namely, of the ruler of the synagogue.

21And he began to say unto them, 21This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

21 That is, you now hear with your ears that today comes to pass that which in this prophesy was foretold.

22And all bare him 22witness, andm wondered 23at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Isn not this Joseph's son?

22 Namely, that He was an excellent Teacher. See Mark 6:2.

m Isa. 50:4; Mat. 13:54; Mark 6:2; Luke 2:47.

23 Or, at the acceptable words or acceptableness. See Psalm 45:2; John 1:14.

n John 6:42.

23And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me 24this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done ino25Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

24 Gr. this parable.

o Mat. 4:13.

25 Where Christ, before this, had taken His dwelling and done many miracles, Mat. 4:13 and 11:23.

24And he said, Verily I say unto you, Nop26prophet is accepted in his own country.

p Mat. 13:57; Mark 6:4; John 4:44.

26 That is, teacher of God’s Word.

25But I tell you of a truth, manyq widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was 27shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

q 1 Kings 17:7; James 5:17.

27 That is, without rain, 1 Kings 17:1, 7.

26But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of 28Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

28 That is, situated under the territory of the city of Sidon.

27And manyr lepers were in Israel 29in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

r 2 Kings 5:14.

29 Or, under the prophet Eliseus.

28And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

29And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

30But he 30passing through the midst of them went his way,

30 Namely, holding their eyes by His Divine power that they saw Him not, or restraining them, seeing His hour was not yet come, John 7:30.

31Ands came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

s Mat. 4:13; Mark 1:21.

32Andt they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was 31with power.

t Mat. 7:29; Mark 1:22.

31 Gr. in power. That is, of great regard and power, Mat. 7:29.

33¶Andu in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit 32of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

u Mark 1:23.

32 That is, which was an unclean devil.

34Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; 33the Holy One of God.

33 That is, the Savior, Who, by God, was sanctified or separated thereunto, John 10:36.

35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, 34Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and 35hurt him not.

34 Gr. Be muzzled. See the annotation at Mark 1 on verse 25.

35 Or, injure.

36And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

37And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

38¶Andv he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into 36Simon’s house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.

v Mat. 8:14; Mark 1:29.

36 Namely, Peter. See Mat. 8:14.

39And he stood 37over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

37 Or above her, namely with His head bowing over her to speak unto her.

40¶Noww38when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; andx he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

w Mat. 8:16; Mark 1:32.

38 That is, when the sabbath was over. See Mark 1:32.

x Mark 7:32; 8:23, 25.

41Andy devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to 39speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

y Mark 1:34; 3:11.

39 Or, to say that they knew that He was the Christ. See hereof the reason in Mark 1 on verse 25.

42Andz when it was day, he departed and went into 40a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

z Mark 1:35.

40 That is, a solitary place to be alone.

43And he said unto them, I must 41preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I 42sent.

41 Gr. evangelize the kingdom of God.

42 Namely, by God the Father.

44And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
