THE GOSPEL ACCORDING to
*LUKE

Luke 24

1Christ's resurrection is declared by two angels to the women that came to the sepulchre, who report it to others, but are not believed. 12Peter visiteth the sepulchre. 13Christ appeareth to two disciples going to Emmaus; 36and to the apostles, eating before them, and explaining the scriptures concerning himself: 49he promiseth them the Holy Ghost, 50and ascendeth into heaven.

1NOW upona the 1first day 2of the week, 3very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and 4certain others with them.

a Mat. 28:1; Mark 16:1; John 20:1.

1 Gr. on one.

2 Gr. of the sabbaths. See Mat. 28:1; Mark 16:2.

3 See hereof the annotation on Mark 16 on verse 2. Gr. deep in the morning.

4 Namely, other women of whom see further in verse 10.

2And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

4And it came to pass, as they were much 5perplexed thereabout, behold, 6two men stood by them 7in shining garments:

5 Or, very much troubled.

6 That is, angels in the shape of men. See Mat. 28:2, who makes mention but of one, since one acted as spokesman.

7 Gr. lightning, that is, glistering like lightning.

5And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

6He is not here, but is risen: rememberb how he 8spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

b Mat. 16:21; 17:22; 20:18; Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:33; Luke 9:22; 18:31.

8 Whereof see Mat. 16:21.

7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

8And they rememberedc his words,

c John 2:22.

9Andd returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to 9all the rest.

d Mat. 28:8; Mark 16:10.

9 Namely, disciples, who were there gathered together.

10It was Mary Magdalene, and 10Joanna, and Mary the mother of 11James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

10 See concerning this Joanna, Luke 8:3.

11 Namely, the less. See Mark 15:40.

11And their words seemed to them as 12idle tales, and they believed them not.

12 Or, madness, dotage.

12Thene arose Peter, and 13ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

e John 20:3, 6.

13 Namely, with John. See John 20:3.

13¶And,f behold, two 14of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore 15furlongs.g

f Mark 16:12.

14 Not of the apostles, but of the other disciples, as appears in verses 18, 33.

15 A furlong is an hundred and twenty-five paces, so that eight furlongs make an Italian mile, whereof three are about an hour’s walk, so that sixty furlongs make about two and an half hours walk.

g (Gr. stadion) 660 feet or 200 meters

14And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

15And it came to pass, that,h while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

h verse 36; Mat. 18:20.

16But their eyes were 16holden 17that they should not know him.

16 That is, withheld by the power of Christ.

17 Or, that they knew Him not.

17And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are 18sad?

18 Or, surly.

18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only 19a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

19 Or, an inhabitant.

19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, whichi was 20a prophet mighty 21in deed and word 22before God and all 23the people:

i Luke 7:16; John 4:19; 6:14.

20 Gr. a man, a prophet.

21 Or, in deeds, or in works, and in words.

22 Namely, Who witnessed thus much of Him by many miracles.

23 Namely, who heard and saw this with admiration and commendation.

20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

21But we trusted that it had been he whichj should have 24redeemed 25Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

j Acts 1:6.

24 That is, would have redeemed.

25 That is, the people of Israel or of the Jews.

22Yea, andk certain women also 26of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

k Mat. 28:8; Mark 16:10; John 20:18.

26 That is, of us.

23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

24And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

26Oughtl not Christ to have suffered these things, and to 27enter into his glory?

l Isa. 50:6; 53:5; Philip. 2:7; Heb. 12:2; 1 Peter 1:11.

27 Namely, after or by His suffering, Heb. 2:9; 1 Peter 1:11.

27Andm beginning at Moses and alln the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

m Gen. 3:15; 22:18; 26:4; 49:10; Deut. 18:15.

n Psalm 132:11; Isa. 7:14; 9:6; 40:10; Jer. 23:5; 33:14; Ezek. 34:23; 37:25; Dan. 9:24; Micah 7:20.

28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he 28made as though he would have gone further.

28 Or, put himself into such a posture; which was done, without dissembling to try them; seeing He would have done the same, except they had held Him with entreaty.

29Buto they 29constrained him, saying, Abidep with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

o Gen. 19:3.

29 Namely, with prayer and perseverance. See Gen. 33:11.

p Acts 16:15; Heb. 13:2.

30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and 30blessed it, and 31brake, and gave to them.

30 Namely, by prayer and thanksgiving. 1 Tim. 4:4, 5.

31 Namely, after the manner of the Jews in the beginning of their meals whose loaves were so baked, that they could conveniently be broken, Acts 2:46.

31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he 32vanished out of their sight.

32 Gr. and He became invisible to them, that is, He withdrew Himself suddenly from their sight.

32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he 33opened to us the scriptures?

33 Or, explained, or expounded.

33And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

3434Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, andq hath appeared to Simon.

34 Namely, the eleven and they who were with them.

q 1 Cor. 15:5.

35And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

36¶Andr as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

r Mark 16:14; John 20:19; 1 Cor. 15:5.

37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen 35a spirit.

35 That is, an apparition, see Mat. 14:26. Or an angel in human shape, Acts 12:9.

38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

39Behold my hands and my feet, 36that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

36 Or, that He I am.

40And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

41And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Haves ye here any 37meat?

s John 21:10.

37 Gr. eatable, or, edible.

42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

43And he took it, and 38did eat before them.

38 Not that He had need of this, seeing He was now become immortal; but to assure them that He had still the same body. See Acts 10:41.

44And he said unto them, Thesetare the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet 39with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

t verse 6; Mat. 16:21; 17:22; 20:18; Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:33; Luke 9:22; 18:31.

39 That is, walked publicly and continually with you before My death.

45Then 40opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

40 Namely, by the illumination of His Holy Spirit, Acts 16:14; 1 Cor. 2:13.

46And said unto them, Thusu it is written, and thus it behovedv Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

u Psalm 22:6; Acts 17:3.

v was necessary for.

47And that repentance and remissionw of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, 41beginningx at Jerusalem.

w Acts 13:38; 1 John 2:12.

41 Forasmuch as the Messiah was principally promised to the Jews, Rom. 1:16, and the Gospel was to go forth out of Zion and Jerusalem, Isa. 2:3.

x Acts 2:4.

48And ye are witnesses of these things.

49¶And,y behold, I send the 42promise of my Father upon you: butz43tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with 44power 45from on high.

y John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7; Acts 1:4.

42 That is, the Holy Ghost, Whom I have promised that I would send you from the Father, John 14:16, 15:26; Acts 1:4.

z Acts 1:4.

43 Gr. sit you down.

44 Namely, with the Holy Ghost, Acts 1:8.

45 That is, from heaven, Acts 2:2; Heb. 1:3.

50¶Andaa he led them 46out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

aa Acts 1:12.

46 See hereof in more detail Acts 1 on verse 12.

51Andab it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

ab Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9.

52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

53And were continually in the temple, praising and 47blessing God. Amen.

47 Or, thanking.
