THE GOSPEL ACCORDING to
*LUKE

Luke 23

1Jesus is accused before Pilate, who sendeth him to Herod. 8Herod disappointed in his expectations mocketh him, and sendeth him back. 13Pilate willing to release Jesus, is prevailed on by the clamours of the people to release Barabbas, and give Jesus to be crucified. 26Being led to the place of execution, Jesus biddeth the women who lamented him to weep rather for themselves and their children: 32he is crucified between two malefactors: 34prayeth for his enemies; 35is scoffed at; 39reviled by one of the malefactors, but confessed by the other, to whom he promiseth a place in paradise. 44The unusual darkness, and rending of the veil of the temple: 46Christ crieth unto God, and expireth: 47the centurion's confession of him. 50Joseph of Arimathaea beggeth his body, and burieth it. 55The women prepare spices for the end of the sabbath.

1ANDa1the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto 2Pilate.

a Mat. 27:2; Mark 15:1; John 18:28.

1 That is, the entire council, Luke 22:66.

2 Namely, the governor for the Romans, of whom see Mat. 27:2.

2And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting 3the nation, and forbiddingb to give tribute to Cæsar ,sayingc that he himself is Christ a 4King.

3 Namely, of the Jews.

b Mat. 17:25; 22:21; Mark 12:17; Luke 20:25; Rom. 13:7.

c Acts 17:7.

4 Namely, of the Jews.

3Andd Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, 5Thou sayest it.

d Mat. 27:11; Mark 15:2; John 18:33.

5 That is, yes, I am. See Mat. 26:25; John 18:37.

4Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no 6fault in this man.

6 Gr. cause, namely, which would make Him guilty of death.

5And they 7were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry,e beginning from Galilee to this place.

7 Or, hardened themselves against it.

e Judæa

6When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

7Andf as soon as he knew that he belonged unto 8Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was 9at Jerusalem at that time.

f Luke 3:1.

8 He was surnamed Antipas, a son of Herod the Great, and a tetrarch over Galilee, who had caused John the Baptist to be beheaded. See concerning him, Luke 3:1, 19.

9 Namely, to keep the feast of the passover with his people.

8¶Andg when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some 10miracle done by him.

g Luke 9:7.

10 That is, sign; out of mere curiosity, which Christ would not nourish.

9Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

10And the 11chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.

11 Namely, which Pilate had sent with Christ unto Herod, verse 15.

11And Herod with his 12men of war 13set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a 14gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

12 Gr. armies, that is those of his guard.

13 Or, having despised him.

14 Or, glistering, such kind of garments as kings and princes used to wear, Gen. 41:42; Esther 8:15, which he does to scoff at His Kingdom, as also did the soldiers, Mat. 27:28, when they put on Him a purple coat.

12¶Andh the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

h Acts 4:27.

13¶Andi Pilate, 15when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

i Mat. 27:33; Mark 15:14; John 18:38; 19:4.

15 Namely, after that Herod had sent Christ again unto Pilate.

14Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having 16examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

16 The Greek word sometimes signifies to question or examine judicially. See the same Acts 12:19.

15No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done 17unto him.

17 Namely, Christ. Others understand it of Herod, namely, that he did nothing to Christ, whereby it could appear that he judged Him to be worthy of death.

16I will therefore 18chastise him, and release him.

18 That is, scourge Him, as is expounded, John 19:1.

17(Forj of necessity he 19must release one unto them at 20the feast.)

j Mat. 27:15; Mark 15:6; John 18:39.

19 Namely, by a custom usual with the Jews. See Mat. 27:15; Mark 15:6, 8.

20 Namely, of the passover. See John 18:39.

18And they cried out all at once, saying, 21Awayk with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

21 Gr. take this One away, namely from the earth, that is, put Him to death, as Acts 21:36, 22:22.

k Acts 3:14.

19(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

20Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

21But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

22And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore 22chastise him, and let him go.

22 That is, scourge Him, as verse 16.

23And they were instantl23with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests 24prevailed.

l urgent, importunate*

23 Gr. with great voices.

24 That is, all the while it became stronger; it took the upper hand.

24Andm Pilate 25gave sentence that it should be as they required.

m Mat. 27:26; Mark 15:15; John 19:16.

25 Or, assented to them.

25And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus 26to their will.

26 Namely, according to their will to be crucified by the soldiers.

26Andn as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they 27laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

n Mat. 27:32; Mark 15:21.

27 Namely, after that Christ had born the same for a while. See hereof John 19:17 the annotations on Mat. 27 on verse 32.

27¶And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, 28which also 29bewailed and lamented him.

28 Namely, women.

29 Gr. smote on their breast, that is, made loud cries.

28But Jesus turning unto them said, 30Daughters of Jerusalem, 31weep not for me, but 32weep for yourselves, and for your children.

30 That is, ye women, who dwell in Jerusalem.

31 That is, not so much.

32 Namely, much rather.

29For, behold, the days are coming, in the which 33they shall say, Blessed are 34the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

33 Or, in which one shall say.

34 Namely, because they shall not see such troubles on their children.

30Then shall they begin 35to say to the mountains, Fallo on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

35 Namely, out of great terror and distress, as Hosea 10:8; Rev. 6:16.

o Isa. 2:19; Hosea 10:8; Rev. 6:16; 9:6.

31Forp if they do these things in a 36green tree, 37what shall be done in the dry?

p Jer. 25:29; 1 Peter 4:17.

36 Gr. moist, that is, to Me, Who am innocent and righteous.

37 That is, what shall then befall the ungodly and guilty (persons)? See similar in 1 Peter 4:17, 18.

32Andq there were also two other, malefactors,r led with him to be put to death.

q John 19:18.

r criminal, a person who does wrong

33Ands when they were come to the place, which is called 38Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

s Mat. 27:33, 38; Mark 15:22; John 19:18.

38 The cause of this name, see Mat. 27 on verse 33.

34¶Then said Jesus, Father,t forgive them; for 39they know not 40what they do. Andu they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

t Acts 7:60; 1 Cor. 4:12.

39 That is, the greater part of them. For, some of them knew it well and sinned against the Holy Ghost, Mat. 12:32.

40 That they, namely, crucify the true Messiah. See Acts 3:17; 1 Cor. 2:8.

u Psalm 22:18; Mat. 27:35; Mark 15:24; John 19:23.

35And the people stood beholding. And thev rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, 41the chosen of God.

v Mat. 27:39; Mark 15:29.

41 Namely, chosen of God to be the true Messiah, 1 Peter 1:20.

36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, 42and offering him vinegar,

42 Namely, the second time, whereof see Mat. 27:34, 48.

37And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

38Andw a 43superscription also was written 44over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

w Mat. 27:37; Mark 15:26; John 19:19.

43 Namely, of His accusation, Mark 15:26.

44 That is, fastened above His head on the cross, John 19:19.

39¶And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

40But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

41And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

42And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy 45kingdom.

45 Namely, of Thy glory.

43And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me 46in paradise.

46 That is, in heaven, 2 Cor. 12:4.

44Andx it was about 47the sixth hour, and there was a darkness 48over all the earth until the ninth hour.

x Mat. 27:45; Mark 15:33.

47 See for the reckoning of these hours, Mark 15:25.

48 Or, over all the land.

45And the 49sun was darkened, andy the 50veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

49 See hereof, Mat. 27:45.

y Mat. 27:51; Mark 15:38.

50 See Mat. 27 on verse 51.

46¶And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father,z into thy hands I 51commend 52my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.aa

z Psalm 31:5; Mat. 27:50; Mark 15:37; John 19:30; Acts 7:59.

51 Or, shall I commend, that is, give in keeping as a pledge that is entrusted with any man, to deliver it again in due time.

52 That is, My soul.

aa gave up the ghost: expired, died*

47Nowab when the centurion saw what was done, he 53glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

ab Mat. 27:54; Mark 15:39.

53 Namely, publicly confessing that Christ was innocent and the Son of God, seeing God had given such clear signs of it, Mat. 27:51.

48And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, 54smote their breasts, and returned.

54 Namely, unto a sign of sorrow and astonishment.

49And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

50¶And,ac behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:

ac Mat. 27:57; Mark 15:43; John 19:38.

51(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself 55waited for the kingdom of God.

55 Or, received, embraced.

52This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

53And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, andad laid it in a sepulchre that was hewnae in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

ae shape by cutting or chopping*

54And 56that day was the preparation, and the sabbath 57drew on.

56 Gr. And the day was the preparation, namely, of the sabbath, and likewise of the passover of the Jews, see Mark 15:42; John 19:14.

57 Gr. lighted on, that is, began to break with the rising of the stars. For, with the Jews that day took its beginning from the setting of the sun, and was reckoned from the one evening to the other.

55And the women also, whichaf came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

af Luke 8:2.

56And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day 58according to the commandment.

58 Namely, according to the fourth commandment, Exod. 20:10.
