THE GOSPEL ACCORDING to
*LUKE

Luke 13

1Christ sheweth that temporal calamities are no sure signs of sinfulness, but that others should take warning by them, and repent. 6The parable of the fig tree that was ordered to be cut down for being fruitless. 10Christ healeth a woman that had been long bowed together, and putteth the hypocritical ruler of the synagogue to silence: 18he likeneth the progress of the gospel to a grain of mustard seed; 20and to leaven: 23being asked of the number of the saved, he exhorteth to strive to enter in at the strait gate: 31he will not be diverted from his course through fear of Herod; and lamenteth over the approaching desolation of Jerusalem.

1THERE were present at that season some that told him 1of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.

1Josephus relates, Antiq. lib. 18, cap. 5, indeed something like this; but the circumstances both of the time and otherwise, show that it is not the same history. Some ancient teachers think that this would have happened within Jerusalem, when some Galileans would have hindered sacrifice to be offered in the temple for the emperor of Rome.

2And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?

3I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise 2perish.

2 That is, be destroyed by God’s righteous judgment; as also afterwards came to pass by the Romans.

4Or those eighteen, upon whom the 3tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were 4sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

3 That is, which was built on or over the fountain or brook of Shiloah; of which brook see Isa. 8:6; John 9:7.

4 That is, sinners, who had more debts or sins. See Mat. 6:12; 18:24.

5I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

6¶He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

7Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why 5cumbereth it the ground?

5 Gr. make the earth unprofitable, or barren, in which something else might be planted that would bring forth fruit.

8And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:

9And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

10And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the 6sabbath.

6 Gr. sabbath-days.

11¶And, behold, there was a woman which had 7a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was 8bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

7 That is, an evil spirit which made her infirm, see verse 16.

8 Gr. bend together.

12And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art 9loosed from thine infirmity.

9 Gr. loosed, or undone.

13And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made 10straight, and glorified God.

10 Or, was straight again.

14And 11the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, Therea are six days in which 12men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day.

11 That is, one of the rulers; for, every synagogue had more than one ruler. See Mark 5:22; Acts 13:15.

a Exod. 20:9; Deut. 5:13; Ezek. 20:12.

12 That is, it is allowed and commanded to work.

15The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, dothb not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering?

b Exod. 23:5; Deut. 22:4; Luke 14:5.

16And ought not this woman, being 13a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath 14bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

13 That is, is descended from the stock of Abraham, and belonging to the covenant which God has made with Abraham and his posterity. See Luke 19:9.

14 That is, who had distressed her with infirmities, as with bonds.

17And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him.

18¶Thenc said he, Unto what is 15the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it?

c Mat. 13:31; Mark 4:30.

15 That is, the preaching of the Gospel, whereby the Kingdom of God is set up.

19It is like a grain of 16mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

16 See of these two parables, Mat. 13 on verse 31.

20And again he said, Whereuntod shall I liken the kingdom of God?

d Mat. 13:33.

21It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

22Ande he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and 17journeying toward Jerusalem.

e Mat. 9:35; Mark 6:6.

17 Gr. making.

23Then said one unto him, Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them,

2418Strivef to enter in at 19the straitg gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall 20not be able.

18 That is, use diligence and labor, Eph. 6:11, etc.; Philip. 3:12; 2 Tim. 4:7.

f Mat. 7:13.

19 Namely, which leads unto life, Mat. 7:14.

g narrow*

20 Namely, because it shall be too late, as appears by what follows.

25When once 21the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to theh door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whencei ye are:

21 This parable is taken from the keeping of weddings in those times, of which may be seen in more detail in Mat. 25 on verse 1, etc.

i Mat. 25:12.

26Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets.

27Butj he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; departk from me, all ye workers of iniquity.

k Psalm 6:8; Mat. 25:12, 41.

28Therel shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, whenm ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the 22kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

22 Namely, of the glory in heaven.

29Andn they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.

30And,o behold, there are 23last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.

o Mat. 19:30; 20:16; Mark 10:31.

23 By the last are understood the Gentiles, who were yet strangers from the covenant of God, and by the first the Jews; and thereby we are given to understand that the Gentiles shall be preferred above many Jews. Rom. 11:17.

31¶The same day there came certain of the Pharisees, saying unto him, 24Get thee out, and depart hence: for 25Herod will kill thee.

24 That is, out of Galilee, where Herod was tetrarch, Luke 3:1; 23:7.

25 This warning was given by them, not out of love to Christ, but because they would gladly be rid of Him. See similar warning, Neh. 6:10, 11; Amos 7:13.

32And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that 26fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do 27cures 28to day and to morrow, and 29the third day I 30shall be perfected.

26 He calls him such by reason of his subtlety and craftiness.

27 Gr. perfect cures.

28 That is, yet a little while. See Hosea 6:2.

29 That is, after the accomplishment of My ministry in this short time.

30 Or, am finished, or, consecrated, or, offered up, John 17:4; 19:30. See in more detail of the signification of this word, Heb. 2 on verse 10; Heb. 5 on verse 9.

3331Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it 32cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

31 That is, I must yet walk a little while here and there to execute Mine office further; and afterward I will go to Jerusalem there to be put to death by you yourselves.

32 That is, hardly, or very seldom.

34 Op33Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; howq often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her 34brood under her wings, and ye would not!

35 That is, the temple and city.

36 This was shortly after fulfilled in some way. See Luke 19:38, and shall be perfectly accomplished at the last day.
