THE THIRD BOOK OF

MOSES,

Leviticus 9

1The first offerings of Aaron for himself, and for the people. 8Aaron offereth them, first for himself, 15and afterwards for the people. 23Moses and Aaron bless the people, and fire cometh from the Lord upon the altar.

1AND it came to pass on the 1eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and 2the elders of Israel;

1 Which followed after the seven days of the consecration, mentioned before, Lev. 8:35. Compare Ezek. 43:26, 27.

2 See Lev. 4 on verse 15.

2And he said unto Aaron, Takea3thee a 4young calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them 5before the LORD.

a Exod. 29:1.

3 That is, to be slain for you. See verse 8.

4 Hebr. the son of a bull, that is, a young bullock.

5 See Lev. 1 on verse 3.

3And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying, Take ye a kid of the goats for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the 6first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering;

6 Hebr. sons of a year. Also Lev. 14:10.

4Also a bullock and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a meat offering mingled with oil: for to day the LORD 7will appear unto you.

7 Hebr. the Lord hath appeared unto you. He speaks of the future narrative, mentioned in verses 23, 24, as if it were present and taken place to make them apprehend the assurance and certainty of the thing. Also Gen. 20:3; Exod. 9:3; Mat. 26:28, etc.

5¶And they brought 8that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation: and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD.

8 Other, Then they took what Moses had commanded them, bringing the same right before the tent of the congregation, that is, bringing the same is here inserted since the verb to take does often include another word which must complete the sense. See Gen. 12 on verse 15.

6And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do: and the 9glory of the LORD shall appear unto you.

9 Understand the glorious tokens of the manifestation of God by fire, which came forth from the Lord, whereby the burnt offering was kindled and consumed without any human means or help. See verses 23, 24. Compare Exod. 24:16, 17; 40:34, 35; Ezek. 43:2.

7And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sinb offering, and thy burnt offering, and make an atonement 10for thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.

b Lev. 16:6; Heb. 7:27.

10 First for thyself, that thou mayest be qualified to make the reconciliation for the people, having reconciled thyself first. For, being sinners as well as the rest, the Levitical priests were necessitated to offer likewise for themselves, Heb. 7:27, 28.

8¶Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew 11the calf of the sin offering, which was 12for himself.

11 That is, what was to be offered for sin. Compare the annotation on verse 15.

12 See on verse 2.

9And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar:

10But the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver of the sin offering, he 13burnt upon the altar; as the LORD commanded Moses.

13 That is, he did prepare and secure the same to be kindled and consumed there. Also verses 13, 14, 17, 20. For, it was presently kindled afterwards and consumed by fire, which fell miraculously down out of heaven, or came forth out of the Holy of Holies, verse 24.

11And the flesh and the 14hide he burnt with fire without the camp.

14 Together with all that was yet remaining of that calf. Compare Lev. 4:11.

12And he slew the burnt offering; and Aaron’s sons 15presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled round about upon the altar.

15 Hebr. caused to find on him, that is, delivered, reached forth to him, or served him with, or brought unto him. Also verses 13, 18, etc.

13And they presented the burnt offering unto him, with the pieces thereof, and the head: and he burnt them upon the altar.

14And he did wash the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt offering on the altar.

15¶And he brought the people’sc offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering 16for the people, and slew it, and 17offered it for sin, as the 18first.

c Lev. 4:13.

16 Or, of the people, that is, to be offered for the people. Compare on verse 8, the annotation.

17 Hebr. he made him sin, that is, he prepared him to be an offering for sin. Or, he purged him, or, made him sinless; that is, he cleansed and purified the people of their sin by offering of him; understand, not really by the blood of the goat, but typically, and as pointing to the only sacrifice of Christ, Who alone is actually able to take away sins, Hebrews 9; 10. See Lev. 4 on verse 20. Wherefore He is likewise said to be sin for us, 2 Cor. 5:21.

18 Namely, the offering of the calf. See verses 2, 8.

16And he brought the burnt offering, and offered it 19according to the manner.

19 That is, in that lawful manner, as it ought to be done. See Lev. 5 on verse 10.

17And he brought thed20meat offering, and took an handful 21thereof, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the 22burnt sacrificee of the morning.

d Lev. 2:1.

20 Which was always to accompany the burnt offering, as is to be gathered from Leviticus 6.

21 Namely, with the meal flour whereof the meat offering consisted. See Lev. 2:2.

22 That is, what was to be offered every morning with the meat offering. See Exod. 29:38, 39, 40.

e Exod. 29:38, etc.

18He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was 23for the people: and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled upon the altar round about,

23 Namely, to be sacrificed for them. Compare the annotation on verse 8.

19And the fat of the bullock and of the ram, the rump, and that 24which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver:

24 Understand, the fat which covers the entrails. Compare Lev. 3:3, 9, 14; 4:8; 7:3, etc., out of which places this word the inwards is inserted here to make up the sense.

20And they put the fat upon the breasts, and 25he burnt the fat upon the altar:

25 Namely, Aaron.

21And the breasts and thef right shoulder Aaron waved for a wave offering before the LORD; as Moses commanded.

f Lev. 7:32.

22And Aaron lifted up his hand toward the people, and 26blessed them, and 27came down 28from offering of the sin offering, and the burnt offering, and peace offerings.

26 Namely, as priest, whose office it was to impart the spiritual goods unto the people of God by teaching, offering and prayers. The public blessing was now a kind of prayer, whereof we read the formulary in Num. 6:23.

27 Namely, from an hillock of an easy, gentle ascent without steps whereon the altar stood, so that it could easily be seen round about what was happening there. Compare Exod. 20:26. Other, being come down.

28 Hebr. from doing of the sin offerings, burnt offerings, etc.

23And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and 29blessed the people: and the 30glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people.

29 Namely, which blessing, as God’s servants over His people, was performed openly with calling on the Name of God, according to the instruction of Num. 6:24, etc. See also of this in Deut. 10:8.

30 See Lev. 9:24 and Lev. 9:6.

24And there came ag fire out 31from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, 32they shouted, and 33fell on their faces.

g 1 Kings 18:38; 2 Chron. 7:1.

31 That is, from the Holy of Holies, called together with the entire tabernacle, the House of God, 1 Sam. 3:15; 1 Chron. 6:31, 32, where was the ark of the covenant, a sign of God’s presence. Or, understand this of heaven, called likewise the habitation of the Lord, Deut. 26:15; 2 Chron. 30:27; Isa. 63:15, from where, in the days of Elijah, the fire fell down upon his sacrifice, 1 Kings 18:38.

32 That is, they have made a joyful noise or acclamation.

33 Unto a sign of humility and reverence. See Gen. 17 on verse 3.
