Leviticus 8

1Moses consecrateth Aaron and his sons. 14Their sin offering. 18Their burnt offering. 22The ram of consecration. 31The place and time of their consecration.

1AND the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

2Takea Aaron and his sons with him, and 1the garments, and 2the anointing oil,b and a bullock 3for the sin offering, and two rams, and a 4basket of unleavened bread;

a Exod. 28:1, 2.

1 Understand, the holy and priestly garments, which God had commanded to be made, Exod. 28:2, and have been made according to this command, Exod. 39:1.

2 Hebr. oil of anointing, or, unction; and so in the sequel. See thereof further, Exod. 30:23, 24, 25, and 37:29.

b Exod. 30:25.

3 That is, which was to be offered for a sin-offering. See hereof and things following, Exod. 29:1, etc.

4 Wherein are the unleavened or the not natural fermented things which they have offered unto God.

3And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

4And Moses did as the LORD commanded him; and the assembly was gathered together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

5And Moses said unto the congregation, This is 5the thing whichc the LORD 6commanded to be done.

5 Hebr. the word. See Gen. 20 on verse 10.

c Exod. 29:4.

6 See Exodus 29 and 30, and compare these two chapters with this.

6And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them 7with water.

7 See Lev. 6 on verse 28, and below verse 11.

7Andd he put upon 8him 9the coat, and girded him with the girdle, and clothed him with the robe, and put 10the ephod upon him, and he girded him with the curious girdle of the ephod, and bound it unto him therewith.

d Exod. 28:4.

8 Namely, Aaron.

9 Of this priestly array, see Exod. 28:4.

10 Of this garment, see Exod. 28:4, 6, 7. It was twofold: the one, of the High Priest made of precious cloth, Exod. 28:6, whereof the text here speaks; the other was of linen, for the rest of the priests and the Levites, and the kings, 1 Sam. 2:18, and 22:18; 1 Chron. 15:27.

8And he put the breastplate upon him: also he put in the breastplatee11the Urim and the Thummim.

e Exod. 28:30.

11 Of these see Exod. 28:30. The words do signify lights and perfections. They were things not made by the art of man, but given by God to Moses to put in, or set on the holy breastplate.

9And he put the mitre upon his head; also upon the mitre, even 12upon his forefront, did he put the golden 13plate, 14the holy crown; asf the LORD commanded Moses.

12 Hebr. over against. Compare Exod. 28:37, 38; 29:6.

13 Or, leaf. Hebr. flower of gold.

14 So called, for that, as some do write, it was made somewhat like a crown. See further, Exod. 29 on verse 6.

f Exod. 28:36; 29:6.

10And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the 15tabernacle and all that was therein, and 16sanctified them.

15 The tent of the congregation.

16 That is, set them apart for an holy use, and so in the next two verses. Likewise Gen. 2:3; Exod. 28:41; 29:1; 2 Chron. 7:7; Joel 1:14.

11And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all his vessels, both the 17laver and his foot, to sanctify them.

17 That is, a vessel, in which the priests, as they went into the tabernacle, did wash their hands and their feet; as also the flesh of their sacrifices, and the instruments or utensils appertaining to that holy service. See Exod. 30:18, 19, 20; 40:7, 30, and Lev. 6:28.

12And he pouredg of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

g Psalm 133:2.

13And Moses brought Aaron's sons, and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put bonnets upon them; ash the LORD commanded Moses.

h Exod. 29:9.

14Andi he brought the bullock for the sin offering: and Aaron and his sons 18laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin offering.

i Exod. 29:1.

18 Other, leaned with or leaned with their hands upon the head, etc.; and also in verse 18. See Lev. 1 on verse 4.

15And he slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and 19purified the altar, and poured 20the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it, to make reconciliation upon 21it.

19 That is, separated the same from common and unholy use. So Exod. 29:36, and Lev. 14:49.

20 Namely, the rest or remainder of the blood. See Exod. 29 on verse 12.

21 That is, by this sacrifice to fit and dispose him for an holy use; or, to make expiation upon him; that is, to offer sacrifices upon him for the reconciliation of men’s transgression. Thus likewise Exod. 29:36.

16And he took all the fat that was 22upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and Moses burned it upon the altar.

22 Other, over the entrails.

17But the bullock, and his hide, his flesh, and his dung, he burnt with fire without the camp; asj the LORD commanded Moses.

j Exod. 29:14; Lev. 4:11.

18¶And he brought the ram for the burnt offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

19And he killed it; and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

20And 23he cut the ram into pieces; and Moses burnt the head, and the pieces, and the fat.

23 See Lev. 1:6.

21And he washed the inwards and the legs 24in water; and Moses burnt the whole ram upon the altar: it was a burnt sacrifice for a 25sweet savour, and an offering made by fire unto the LORD; ask the LORD commanded Moses.

24 See on verse 11.

25 See Lev. 1 on verse 9, and Gen. 8:21.

k Exod. 29:18.

22¶And he brought the other ram, the ram 26of consecration: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

26 Hebr. of the fillings, or, fulfillings; that is, by the offering of which ram they were confirmed in their priesthood. See Lev. 7 on verse 37.

23And he slew it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the 27tip of Aaron's right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.

27 Understand, the tender and soft part of the lower part of the ear, called otherwise, ear-lap, or ear-tip.

24And he brought Aaron's sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses sprinkled 28the blood upon the altar round about.

28 Namely, the rest or remainder of the blood of that sacrifice. Also verse 15.

25Andl he took the fat, and the rump, and all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the right shoulder:

l Exod. 29:22.

26And out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was 29before the LORD, he took one unleavened cake, and 30a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and upon the right shoulder:

29 See Lev. 1 on verse 3.

30 Hebr. a cake of the bread of the oil.

27Andm he put all upon Aaron’s 31hands, and upon his sons' hands, and waved them for a 32wave offering before the LORD.

m Exod. 29:24.

31 Hebr. palms of Aaron, and so in the sequel.

32 See Lev. 7 on verse 30.

28And Moses took them from off their hands, and burnt them on the altar upon the burnt offering: they were 33consecrations for a sweet savour: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

33 Hebr. of the fillings, or, fulfillings; and so in the sequel. See Lev. 7 on verse 37.

29And Moses took the breast, and waved it for a wave offering before the LORD: for of the ram of consecration it was Moses’ 34part; asn the LORD commanded Moses.

34 This was in reference to that time, when the priesthood was first instituted, and Moses administered the priest’s office extraordinarily. For afterwards he did it no more, keeping himself to the political and prophetical office, and putting his own children too among the common Levites.

n Exod. 29:26; Lev. 7:33.

30And Moseso took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and 35sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

o Exod. 29:21.

35 See on verse 10.

31¶And Moses said unto Aaron and to his sons, Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: andp there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat 36it.

p Exod. 29:32; Lev. 24:9.

36 Namely, the remainder of the flesh and bread that is in the basket.

32And that which remaineth of the flesh and of the bread shall ye burn with fire.

33And ye shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days, until the days of your consecration be at an end: for seven days shall he 37consecrate you.

37 That is, confirming in your priestly office by certain ceremonies; see Lev. 7 on verse 37.

34As he hath done this day, so the LORD hath commanded to do, to make an atonement for you.

35Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and 38keep the charge of the LORD, 39that ye die not: for so I am commanded.

38 Or, keep this ordinance of the Lord. Understand the priests’ bounden duty in observing and keeping all that was commanded them to do in the tabernacle, and especially what concerned their present consecration. Compare Num. 3:7, 8; 9:19; 2 Kings 11:5.

39 As happened afterwards to Nadab and Abihu, when they, contrary to the ordinance, offered strange fire to the Lord.

36So Aaron and his sons did all things which the LORD commanded 40by the hand of Moses.

40 Hebr. through the hand of Moses, that is, through his ministry and direction. See Exod. 4 on verse 13; also Lev. 10:11; Num. 16:40; Joshua 14:2.
