Leviticus 6

1The trespass offering for sins done wittingly. 8The law of the burnt offering, 14and of the meat offering. 19The offering at the consecration of a priest. 24The law of the sin offering.

1AND the LORD 1spake unto Moses, saying,

1 The first seven verses of this chapter are made by some to be included at the end of the previous, fifth chapter, according to the division of verses in the Hebrew text, and that not without reason; they still treat here of the trespass-offerings.

2If a 2soul sin, and commit a trespass 3against the LORD, and 4lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or 5in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath 6deceived his neighbour;

2 Or, man; and so in the sequel. See Gen. 12 on verse 5.

3 He that trespasses against his neighbor, sins likewise against the Lord; not only because man is God’s creature, and appertains to Him, but also that God has commanded us to love our neighbor, and not to do him any hurt; besides that the Name of the Lord is often misused in and about the trespasses which are committed against the neighbor.

4 Other, denied.

5 Hebr. of putting of the hand, that is, of that which was put and entrusted, or committed into the hand, whether it be of one alone, or of more, with whom he has entered into contract, by plighting of the hand, or signing with the hand, or any other binding way, to be true and trusty about the matter committed.

6 Or, hath deceitfully withdrawn from his neighbor.

3Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; ina any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein:

a Num. 5:6.

4Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,

5Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it 7in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, 8in the day of his trespass offering.

7 Hebr. in his head; that is, in the principal itself which was embezzled, or, in the principal sum.

8 That is, when he shall be found and declared guilty. Other, on the day of his guilt-offering; that is, when he shall be obliged to offer the sacrifice for his guilt, to be reconciled himself with God, he shall then at the same time make satisfaction to his neighbor. Compare Mat. 5:23.

6And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, 9with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest:

9 See Lev. 5 on verse 15.

7And the priest shall make an atonement for 10him before the LORD: and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing 11therein.

10 See Lev. 1 on verse 4.

11 Hebr. of the guilt therein.

8¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

9Command Aaron and his sons, saying, 12This is the law of the burnt offering: 13It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and 14the fire of the altar shall be burning in it.

12 That is, the pattern of the manner how the burnt-offering shall be done or administered, or the daily, Exod. 29:38, or the voluntary, Leviticus 1, or that what the law commands for any trespass.

13 To wit, the burnt-offering. Here is a description of the burnt-offering; compare the same with the annotation on Gen. 8:20.

14 Namely, when the first sacrifice occurred on this altar, this fire has fallen down from heaven, and thereafter it was to be maintained burning continually, verses 12 and 13.

10And the priest shall put on his 15linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put 16them beside the altar.

15 See hereof, Exod. 28:39, 40.

16 Namely, the ashes. See Lev. 1 on verse 16.

11And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes 17without the camp unto a clean place.

17 See Lev. 4 on verse 12.

12And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on 18it 19every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings.

18 To wit, upon the altar.

19 Hebr. in the morning, in the morning. See Gen. 39 on verse 10.

13The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.

14¶And this is the law ofb the 20meat offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the LORD, 21before the altar.

b Num. 15:4, etc.

20 See Lev. 2 on verse 1.

21 Other, upon the altar. Hebr. at the face of the altar.

15And he shall take of it his handful, of the flour of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the altar for 22a sweet savour, ceven 23the memorial of it, unto the LORD.

22 See Lev. 1 on verse 9.

c Lev. 2:9.

23 See Lev. 2 on verse 2.

16And the remainder thereof 24shall Aaron and his sons eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; 25in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it.

24 This law was grounded on three reasons: 1. That the things once hallowed, might not be slighted through common use. 2. That the same might not be misused afterwards by or among the people, for show, or pride, or gluttony, or any otherwise. 3. That the priests, who served at the altar, would live of the altar, 1 Cor. 9:13.

25 Hereby is expressed, which was the holy place where the holy provisions, belonging to the priests, were to be eaten. See also verse 26, and Lev. 10:12, 13.

17It shall not be baken with leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is 26most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering.

26 See Lev. 2 on verse 3.

18All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute 27for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the LORD made by fire: every 28oned29that toucheth them shall be 30holy.

27 Hebr. institution of eternity. See Gen. 13 on verse 15.

28 Or, whoever.

d Exod. 29:37.

29 Namely, the things mentioned in the two foregoing verses.

30 That is, to be reputed holy and not to be used for any other things; but it must either be broken, or washed, or also scoured and rinsed. See verses 27, 28.

19¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

20This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons, which they shall offer unto the LORD in the day when 31he is anointed; the tenth part of an 32ephah of fine flour for 33a meat offering perpetual, 34half of it in the morning, and half thereof at night.

31 Namely, Aaron or any one of his sons.

32 See Lev. 5 on verse 11.

33 That is, either, like unto the continual meat-offering, or, together with the continual meat-offering, or, for a continual meat-offering; to wit, in the anointing of the priests. As for the continual meat-offering, see Exod. 29:40.

34 That is, the half part of fine flour for the morning sacrifice, the other for the evening sacrifice.

21In a pan it shall be made with oil; and when it is 35baken, thou shalt bring it in: and the 36baken pieces of the meat offering shalt thou offer for a sweet savour unto the LORD.

35 Other, fried, and so cooked that it bubbles up and be blown up to some swelling and rising; so Lev. 7:12.

36 Hebr. cookings of the meat-offering of pieces, that is, cooked or baked pieces of the meat-offering.

22And the priest of his sons that is 37anointed in his stead shall offer it: it is a statute for ever unto the LORD; it shall be wholly 38burnt.

37 Namely, to succeed him after his death in the priestly office.

38 Namely, to be wholly or utterly burnt.

2339For every meat offering for the priest shall be wholly burnt: it shall not be eaten.

39 Namely, wholly and entirely to be kindled and burnt. Other, it shall be burnt whole.

24¶And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

25Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is the law of the 40sin offering: 41In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the LORD: it is 42most holy.

40 See Lev. 4 on verse 3.

41 See Lev. 1 on verse 3.

42 See Lev. 2 on verse 3.

26Thee priest that offereth it 43for sin shall eat it: in the holy place shall it be eaten, in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation.

e Hosea 4:8.

43 Hebr. that purges (it), that is, offers it for sin.

2744Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be 45holy: and when there is sprinkled of the blood thereof upon any garment, thou shalt wash 46that whereon it was sprinkled in 47the holy place.

44 Or, who.

45 See on verse 18.

46 To wit, garment.

47 See on verse 16.

28But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall be broken: and if it be sodden in a brasen pot, it shall be both scoured, and rinsed in 48water.

48 Namely, in holy water. See Exod. 40:7, 30 and Lev. 8 on verse 11.

29All the males among the priests shall eat thereof: it is most holy.

30And no 49sin offering, whereoffany of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire.

49 Such as were the sin-offerings to be offered for the trespass of the high priest, and that of the entire congregation, Lev. 4:5, 16. Likewise the yearly sin-offering on the day of the atonement, Lev. 16:27.

f Lev. 4:5; Heb. 13:11.
